Are there any members here who would admit to wearing torso clothing when they enter a pool or hot-tub? Seeing Nathan Lane do it in Mid-Century Modern made me wonder if there are any gay guys who would actually do this.

I’ve never done it but that’s because being strangled by a wet T-Shirt is uncomfortable to me. I guess I might start covering up in the pool the first time some kid points at me and yells “Mommy, look! That guy has manboobs!” I admit that they’re starting to develop but no one has commented.  Yet.

Because I'm usually not wearing any bottoms when entering a pool or hot tub, it makes no sense to be wearing a top.

outside in direct sunlight

I should have said sunburn sensitivity or skin cancer does not count. If I had any of these, I would never step foot in direct sunlight. I don't think these are the issues with Nathan Lane, and I have not heard he has ugly surgery scars, which I could also understand. I was simply thinking basic vanity. Would a gay man cover his wet body in a wet area simply because he doesn't want to show himself shirtless?

I love swimming naked, so I can't imagine. I have seen videos in the Middle East where the men wear those baggy pants when they swim. It's weird to me, but I did not grow up in a hyper-religious society.

A good reason to avoid dipping the toes into water wherever children are present.

Now we're talking. LOL.

It depends, it we have eaten, I used to  keep my t shirt on so as to not upset anyone's digestion.   But in general, I am of the opinion that hell, this is what a fat old man looks like naked, get over it.  The first time I met Vin Marco, we were walking along the Boardwalk on the Jersey Shore and he was not wearing a shirt and was looking as he does.  After a few steps, I took off my shirt too.  I figured who the hell is going to be looking at me?  He told me later that he was glad that I was that comfortable enough to take off my shirt.   So really, it just comes down to how comfortable one is with one's body.  At this point, fuck 'em if they have a weak stomach.

On Modern Family, when the older gays realize there are younger gays at the pool party:

Good on you.  Mine are moving in on Symone Sanders-Townsend.  😳

I would love to be able to swim naked but most hotels frown on that kind of thing….I do enjoy a naked spell in a hotel spa jacuzzi that’s men-only.  I’ve found that when presumably straight guys see a naked guy in there, though, they head for the exit.

My father made me start wearing a tshirt when we went swimming when I was about 10 because of my weight. I never gave it up until I started hiring guys and doing so away from people I knew. I would wear a tshirt in the Atlantic, though, either way. It just seems right irrespective of weight.

That was so fabulous. I really loved that show. Hats off to Eric Stonestreet (who isn't gay) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Without perfect Hollywood gay bodies, they went shirtless on national TV. There is no way Nathan Lane would ever do that, and he's been honest about that for a very long time.

last year at a hotel with some old friends, one of my oldest friends (mid-60's but looks like he's in his 30's) wore a long-sleeve t-shirt at (and in) the pool.

"one of my oldest friends (mid-60's but looks like he's in his 30's)"...I don't like your friend.

It makes it look you are trying to hide something unpleasant.

That's exactly where my mind went. Wearing a shirt in water draws more attention to you, which is why Nathan Lane immediately stood out in the hot-tub scenes. His fellow actors were shirtless, and the writers had to write something into the script about his "being that way since childhood." I get that Nathan may not want to be shirtless standing next to Matt Bomer. Fully clothed, I'd have a difficult time standing next to Matt Bomer. I'm curious how those conversations with the creators went, when they told Nathan there would be hot-tub scenes.

I don't anymore, but I have in the past. Body image issues and caring too much about what people who I don't know and play no part in my life would think about me.

Personally, and maybe because I've been insecure about my looks, I don't react to anyone with a piece of clothing like that. I just let people be.

To quote Roberta Flack-you are, "strumming my pain with your fingers."  I was thinking this when I posted-about me, of course-not you.

I got that, I intended to only acknowledge that I'm a kindred spirit.  Sorry I missed the mark.  😔
