Monkeypox a new worry for gay and bi men

FYI for those in NYC.  Been checking the nyc vax site a few times a day. This morning around 8am the system had 1 appointment at 1030a, so I snagged it.  Ubered to Staten Island.  Went right in, no line, hardly anybody in waiting room, got the shot and was out. Easy. Some amount of luck, yes, but just so you NYers know.  People do cancel and slots open up.

I had a similar experience. It was just a painless hard lump that slowly went away after 7-10 days.

BTW, just in case anyone is curious on what the lesions may look like in the 'underwear zone', here's an article from New England Journal of Medicine, published July 2022.

Yesterday, here in LA, I had my first dose, which they offered during routine STD check.  No observable adverse effects at all, and I am very attuned to side effects (I find them interesting).  We scheduled the second dose four weeks from yesterday.

Same happened to me last week at the Gay Lesbian Center in Hollywood.

Routine STD check. I mentioned to my counselor that I had secured a date in August for Jynneos at a County health facility. He mentioned, well we have it here if you want to get it. After my testing, I was in and out of that Vax clinic in 25 minutes. Organized, easy and a date in August for my second.

Zero side effects

A client in Nassau County (Long Island) says the county health department is offering appointments, including the four week follow up.  Quick and easy to get in and out, he said.

My friend drove out to Stony Brook and got his vaccine and his 2nd appointment as well. Lucky them. But, it's a long drive from the city.

For those of you wondering if the small ox vaccine they had as a child offers protection, 10% of all cases in Ontario, Canada are in people over 50.  Get the shot if you are at risk.

Adjusting for population age pyramid proportions, the attack rate is nevertheless much higher, 4-fold, for the younger group. This is consistent with tracking estimates of risk ratio for Monkeypox disease in surveillance of small contained outbreaks, comparing across the same dichotomous variable, historical Smallpox vaccination or not. Age cut-off as the dichotomous variable has always shifted since 1980. However, the share of the vaccinated population is considerably reduced, with a net effect of much greater susceptibility within the total population. There has always been infection breakthrough among the vaccinated. The message is the same: access to MVA-BN is urged.

Like we expect young gay men to not have sex with strangers. When did that ever work out?

This is the correct, realistic response.

Human beings often times let their urges dictate their actions.  Monkeypox be damned.

HIV/AIDS spiked through our community in the early '80s, but that didn't stop guys from continuing to fuck bareback.

I plan to get the shingles vaccine soon,

A bit off topic of Monkeybox, but...just a reminder to anyone over 50 to do the same.  I had shingles once before the vaccine was available.  I made sure to get the two doses as soon as it was available.  Believe me, you don't want Shingles!   I'm guessing the ones who have experienced Monkeypox might feel the same way about that.

For those of you who got your vaccine in the LA/Hollywood area, did they ask for any documentation or to prove you were a resident before your vaccine appointment?

I'm getting my first shot this weekend in Vancouver, and hoping I can get the 2nd dose in LA during my visit next month.

At APLA, they did ask for my Driver's License, but wether that was for record keeping or verification I was local, and therefore eligible, I'm unsure, sorry.

It’s all National Stockpile but what ‘resident’ means is ambiguous. I might infer that it is not explicitly inclusive of non-residents due to the desire to avoid openly exclusionary language.

That is a good point. I will take my chances and do a walk in with what documentation I have when I visit.

Worse case, I will still get to catch up on some exhibits at the Broad as a consolation prize. 😀

Further to question of resident specificity, state of MASS indicates living or working in that state, so I think it may be boundaried across the nation. In Canada, it’s pretty much ‘honey badger don’t care’ where you live.

Heard on the CBC news just now that Monkeypox cases are increasing rapidly in Toronto and will soon catch up with Quebec, where they are mostly in Montreal. I just got back from Toronto and found that while some escorts that I communicated with had taken their shot, others were completely blasé. Those latter told me they had no intention of getting one. And they all advertise on RM.

I think we will see more escorts declaring their vaccination status for MP on RM the same way as for covid before too long.

So reckless of the dismissive escorts for their own health security as clients would rightly assume that they themselves do not pose a risk to providers as transmission vectors. It is reasonable for clients to assume a provider would have added personal vaccination to their own hygiene playbook even if a random hook-up hasn’t.

I don't think it is sufficient for a client to assume an escort has been vaccinated for MP. Its always best to ask.

Another point in the CBC report was that the feds have released 75000 doses to the provinces but to date only 27000 have been administered. As SirBillyBob has reported, there was no-one in the clinic in the Gay Village recently except 22 bored clinic staff.

Sometimes gay men and their associates can be their own worst enemies.

There's a lot to be said for your response.

As a professional sex worker, I'd reckon it's our job to be up on the latest and greatest when it comes to protecting ourselves (and by extension, our clients).

Vaccinations and front-line defense, any and all, are a must.  Hep, COVID, monkeypox, PrEP, flu shot, etc.  There's a lot out there that's available (and free) that can make your life and long term health in this industry a lot easier.
