When I was a young pup just getting started I advertised in the back of the Bay Area Reporter, with a line ad. No pic at all! Those were different times for sure.

When I first moved to NYC in the '80's, my first two roommates were escorts and they both had ads that weren't much more than their names and contact numbers. I was working a lot as a photographer back then, shooting mostly headshots for performers, so I offered to take some for them for free, but they just didn't feel the need. Of course back then I was also still shooting film and developing/printing it myself in a community darkroom rented by the hour. Time flies.

Or The Advocate, Hot Spots Magazine, David Magazine, Next (I believe that was the mag's name)...

I often hired from ads in Hot Spots when I was wintering in Miami. This was back at the turn of the century. I had some pretty good hires and no real losers. I used the telephone to call them so at least could hear their voice.

The ads generally had enough info to go on. And the professionals had their ads in constantly so you knew they were genuine. But there always was a little left to the imagination and the surprise when meeting for the first time. Most times it was a nice surprise.

WOW! I remember you from when I lived in SF back then! Nice you're still around and looking good!

WOW right back at ya! I always wonder if people remember me from long ago, and I wonder what happened to guys I met all those years ago. Needless to say, I look a bit different these days than I did when I started!

In Texas we had This Week In Texas (TWIT). It had ads for bars and restaurants from all over the state. In the classifieds you could find real estate for sale or rent, professional services like attorneys or accountants, and of course Escorts.  Those were the ads I was interested in. Usually only height, weight, race, hair color and words like "open minded", "dinner companion", "fun time".  No cell phones or emails back then so there would be a phone number in the ad, usually to a pager. You'd call and get a beep or tone which meant you were to enter your phone number to get a return call.  When I was out of town I'd put in the hotel telephone number, hit the # and then my room number.  What was nice was you would actually get a return phone call in which you could have a real conversation and decipher if it would be a good match or not. Only once or twice did I say "Sorry, you're not my type" when they showed up.  But I would always give them a 1/4 - 1/2 of the rate for their trouble of showing up.  I am the one who said No, they didn't so I felt it only fair to compensate them somehow.

Yes to face and full body. But that's not always a guarantee since the photos could be catfish or outdated.

If the photos are not an accurate description of the provider and we end up meeting, I pull out the photos that are online and tell them, "sorry, you're not what you advertised to be." And just leave.

Years ago in the CL days I used to see a young blond with one of the most exquisite lean, smooth muscle physique. True worship material. His face, however, was a little “off”. He had a great head of blond hair, though. Since we both liked leather and mild kink, I bought him a leather mask for our second meet, which he loved, and he’d wear that during our sessions. I know I have a picture of him in leather gear somewhere.

This question is bonkers to me.

As a provider, I can’t imagine wanting to show up to a new client without them seeing everything they need to see to know they like me.

Granted, this feeling may be tied to having grown comfortable being widely naked on the internet.  But so much of my comfort showing up for a new client is tied to them knowing everything they need to know in advance.

That's great! Often times I take it even a step further for their benefit... I offer to meet in a lobby and out outside the building to put THEIR mind at ease... so that they can see its actually me and that I do indeed look like  my photos.

What do you do when a client comes out of the elevator, walks into the lobby, sees you, is overwhelmed (in a good way), and faints?

I agree. Some element of surprise is important but that should be in the content of the session rather than in who the client finds when they turn up.

Recently I had a new client, who had seen my pics etc. He’d booked an hour but after he’d seen me in person, after showering he asked to extend the time. I was very flattered.

If I had  a body and face such as yours, I would be walking around nude as much as possible.

I do like having a good perspective of a new provider but a full anatomical portfolio is not expected.

So if a provider's pictures that I can see are a bit insufficient, I have migrated to asking "Can you share the pictures that are locked on Rent.Men or are there others you share?  (as an aside, I am not a paid subscriber to RentMen, OnlyFans, JustForFans, or X) I don't demand any nor do I ask for specifics.  I usually will also ask "any changes to how you look compared to your pictures on line and if so what is your 'current look'"?  I have to be honest having a clean shaven provider show up like the guitarist from ZZ Top, or a blond show up with pink curtains and drapes is a bit shocking and not in a good way.

I will tell them that I am not a paying subscriber to any of the previously mentioned services.  In the majority of cases, they will ask "what do you want to see" and when i say "it's your call but I can tell you I am a legs and ass man", the provider is usually accommodating.  Some aren't but then I have the option to proceed or not.

If face pics are not provided, I will try to arrange for a quick meet and greet to ensure compatibility, and that is on them to proceed or not.

Personally, I don’t care. Prospective clients ask for various pics. I send them. Sometimes they hire me. Sometimes they don’t. I’m not bothered.

People don’t hire me because I’m the hottest guy on the grid. So-and-so’s dick is bigger, so-and-so has rippling abs. Whatever. They hire me because they like me for me. You can’t communicate that in a photo, or a hundred. That’s why I don’t really mind. I know clients best matched to me will find me and hire me over and over. That’s my bread and butter business.

So what if they’re jerking off to my photos?

More power to them.

Agreed.  Before hiring, I want to see a couple of torso shots front and back, a face pic that doesn't have to be of the passport variety -- a side view or a partially obstructed or shadowed photo that still gives a sense of the guy's looks is fine, and a dick pic (which can also be in revealing underwear or with a towel covering) that confirms the guy's stated size is approximately accurate.

I would hesitate to meet someone without seeing any face pics, but because I won't send a face pic myself, I've offered to come to their place when they can judge whether to let me in or not.  I figure that, while I'm pretty ugly, my face is still better than the body.

There are plenty of providers who will rely on client desperation to overrule good judgment. If a provider is unwilling to post enough photos to give you an honest representation of what you’ll be seeing when you show up, they are most likely going to be a disappointment to you. It is perfectly possible to maintain privacy and still provide enough body shots that you know what you’re getting into. Pictures taken at odd angles or with extreme close-ups or strange lighting, generally mean that the person posting the photos is being dishonest or delusional in their self representation.

Personally, I do not need to see a provider’s face. Nor am I impressed by professional photography. A handful of photos that can give me a sense of what the man’s body looks like, what equipment he’s working with, and his general taste level are sufficient. Pair that with some intelligible ad copy and I am good to go.
