CA has announced that gyms may open in a week, but the requirements are clearly designed with large commercial gyms in mind. There is no way that the small gym for residents in my HOA can be compliant with all the details. The same problem has arisen with our pools and all the other recreational facilities for our residents. I fear that all our amenities are going to be wiped out by new regulations.

If they take away the amenities could the residents ask for a lower HOA since those perks won't be offered any more if taken away?

Hugs,

Greg

Probably not, since they are all part of the physical community property which needs to continue to be maintained, even if they can't be used at present. Eventually the regulations will be adjusted or eliminated, but some of the requirements will actually cost more money to meet, so the HOA fees will go up. HOA fees are not like rent: the residents own the community property, so we vote on the fees.

These rules / regulations don’t seem particularly overbearing or cost prohibitive......unless requirements in the rest of CA are radically different from LA county.

We are a 55+ community. Our gym space is fairly small, so the repositioning of equipment would require elimination of some of the most used ones, like the treadmills. The two outdoor pools are large, and the surroundings are also used by sunbathers, so allowing only one person at a time into the enclosed pool areas is unreasonable, and would also end the popular aquatic classes. Perhaps most onerous is that the regulations assume the spaces have full-time staff monitoring them; we have no staff to do that, only maintenance people, and the expense of hiring them would be substantial.

Are we reading the same document ?

# of people in the pool can be up to 10 at a time (certainly aquatic classes of a maxx of 10 at a time can work)

the restriction for only 1 person at a time is for a spa / a hot tub....

for a residential condo or apt complex setting, staff monitoring adherence to rules is only recommended, not required....no hiring of supervisors required if your aged 55+ community neighbors can act like responsible adults all on their own.

Aha! I didn't read the one you posted, which is for LA county. The Riverside county restrictions up till now have not contained anything like this, and the city of Palm Springs has even more restrictions than the county. The news that gyms could open next week was only announced here yesterday afternoon, and I haven't seen any county update to their regulations yet. Pools here were allowed to open a couple of weeks ago, but only with the one person at a time restriction, so our management has not re-opened them at all. If the new regulations here are like those you quote, things will be much better. However, the distancing requirements for equipment in the gym will still be a problem.

BTW, where did you find the statement about residential complexes and staff moderating? I couldn't find it in the link that you posted. Maybe we are not reading the same document.

My gym opened up this past week but I cancelled my membership back in March and was charged for June anyway! I was so bugged I went in person to cancel and they wouldn't even let me in the building. The guy made up some nonsense about me having a high temp. I definitely had one when I left, I was pissed. I went to another branch of the gym and cancelled again. I just don't think it's safe yet, nothing has changed!!! I was stunned to see guys without masks or social distancing all over the equipment that no one was wiping down. As of now I use the Nike app, which is TOUGH, and I use my free weights. I'm definitely out of shape :(

Part 3.b. specifies that there should be a monitored system for pool use in place. It "recommends" that a "designated onsite manager or other responsible person" do the monitoring of the pool use but does not say that the monitoring is not required. Admittedly, the wording of item 2 is squishy, but someone has to do the monitoring at some point, and there is no one on the current staff who has "supervision" of the two pools (in two widely separated sections of the community) as his or her specific duty. The system described in the document is fairly specific about how the pools are to be used, and that can't very well be monitored by someone who isn't present at the pools, which are open from 7am to 9pm (early and late hours are popular times for pool use in a hot desert). Contracted maintenance staff can't be used for that purpose, so unless enough responsible volunteers from among the residents can be found to do the monitoring, staff will have to be hired to do it. Until now at least, the city's own COVID regulations have required someone to be present to do the monitoring, which is why the pools have remained closed. Current management staff consists of six individuals (one of them physically disabled), five of them working remotely from home.

Chinese flu or not, not wiping down equipment after use is gross. I always wipe equipment down before and after. As for masks when excerising, unless you are trying to limit your much needed oxygen and wanting to potentially pass out wearing a mask when excerising is not recommended.

Greg

I was out for my 6km walk, rather than a run, today, because of this annoying calf muscle pull, because of the runners my doctor recommended … I digress.

During my walk I came across two guys that were practicing their turn arounds for para-sailing. I had a chance to chat with them about their equipment, I hadn't really seen the sails up close and in action before. Where we were they couldn't get more than a few feet off the ground for some moments. Tomorrow they're jumping off cliffs for 15 minute rides.

I'll be picnicking.

  • 2 months later...

I stayed in pretty good shape using dumbbells, bands and bodyweight exercises - I was smoother than normal, but didn't lose any size. A couple months ago, we invested in our own equipment and turned our living room into a home gym. I'm in better shape than when I was going to the gym because I don't have to wait for equipment, I don't have any excuse for skipping workouts and it is supremely relaxing to lift at home all by myself. As a matter of fact, I'm almost in contest shape.

Thanks, interesting if predictable article. Can't say any of my friends have been complaining about loss of muscle mass. I think he must have a select group of friends. Well, I guess we all have a select group of friends, his is just a different selection than mine.

I've always enjoyed stretching, but have been resistant to yoga. Get over it. During Covid, I've been loving following along to multiple Vinyasa routines on Youtube, and they are fantastic.

Hatha yoga I like as well, but so far I prefer the flow of Vinyasa.

As an older man, keeping a fit look takes work. Without the gym, the muscles I enjoyed earlier in life are not so present. I'd love to have a good workout, but not with COVID.

I was fortunate in that my swimming pool opened at the beginning of July and I have been using it about 5 times a week for doing 45 minutes of laps combined with aqua fit exercises. I am usually all by myself but the odd time with one or two others. When more than one, we keep in separate lanes. The pool is regulated by club staff through making 1 hour appointments 1 day in advance or on same day if spots are still available. It’s an indoor pool so this could conceivably last through the fall and winter, when outdoor pools close here in Canada. The great part is that the club extended our memberships, paid on an annual basis, by the amount of time we lost from March to July, so will only have to pay in the spring of 2021. Other than that I still try to do some exercises in my bedroom like stretching, sit-ups etc. And then, once every three or four weeks I reward myself with an overnight or two with an escort, which is also a good form of exercise. I am now looking forward to this long weekend and another session (or two) with escorts after a 4 week abstinence. A plus is that with this current regime in place, I am keeping my sanity and positive outlook. I should add that I am also doing most of my volunteer work as well, except for one organization that has closed down for the duration of the pandemic. They will still be around at that time because they have a large trust account of investments that pays the bills like rent, insurance, etc even if they are not doing anything.

Have been biking more like many other people as obvious by the inability to get bikes and supplies (here at least)! Have put in about 1500 km since the end of June but will be fast coming to an end as fall closes in on us and will miss it badly! I guess back to the gym after that which I have been avoiding.
