samhexum Posted October 12, 2024 Posted October 12, 2024 444 7-Eleven stores across North America are closing for underperforming, according to the company. Seven & I Holdings, 7-Eleven’s Japan-based parent company, announced in an earnings report Thursday that the stores are closing because of a dip in sales, particularly cigarette sales, as well as decreased traffic and inflation. A list of which stores will be closing was not released. 7-Eleven has 13,000 stores across the US and Canada, which means the closures would only impact 3% of the company’s portfolio. The convenience store chain has faced six consecutive months of traffic declines, including a 7.3% dip in August. “The North American economy remained robust overall thanks to the consumption of high-income earners, despite a persistently inflationary, elevated interest rate and deteriorating employment environment,” Seven & I Holdings said in an earnings release. “In this context, there was a more prudent approach to consumption, particularly among middle- and low-income earners.” The chain highlighted that cigarette sales, once the largest sales category for convenience stores, have fallen 26% since 2019 and that a shift in sales to other nicotine products has failed to make much of a difference. The company said it will transform its stores to be centered around food, which is now the highest-selling category. Seven & I Holdings strives to be “a world-class retail group centered around its food that leads retail innovation through global growth strategies centered on the 7-Eleven business and proactive utilization of technology,” the company said. In July, the convenience store chain said it would also sell popular international food items, including milk, bread, egg sandwiches and miso ramen, at its U.S. stores. Tane 1
samhexum Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 A New Jersey man was spotted doing his neigh-borhood shopping with the help of a real life little pony pal this week. The unidentified shopper – filmed with his own little Mr. Ed in Woodbridge’s Wegmans supermarket – isn’t looking to stirrup trouble. He said he has a mobility issue and needs to lean against the miniature horse — a registered service animal — when he is out shopping, according to NJ Patch. The man said he often brings the equine into Woodbridge stores, including the ShopRite and Lowe’s, said the outlet, who first reported the story. “I really don’t like the attention I am receiving, and I am trying to get (a video circulating on social media) down,” the shopper, who asked for anonymity, told Patch on Friday. “People have been commenting they are going to steal the horse. I am going to have to take legal action.” A 15-second TikTok clip with 624,000 views and 29,000 likes shows the slow-moving shopper pushing a cart through the produce section in Wegmans with his better hoof in tow. Quipped commenter AnaisJosette: “I love this! Only two animals recognized to the ADA is a dog or miniature horse and I never thought I’d see it ” “Why am I never at wegmans when the cool things happen!” lamented dwrght1981. Woodbridge police — who confirmed to Patch that the four-legged friend is allowed to remain in the store because it is a service animal — did not return The Post’s messages Friday. “It is a miniature horse and by Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, they can be service animals,” Woodbridge Police Director Robert Hubner told the outlet. A Wegmans employee brayed to The Post that the horse was in the store and is indeed a service animal, but any other questions “have to go through corporate.” + sync 1

Mini horses can do just as well as dogs, and their biggest advantage is they live a lot longer, 30-40 years vs. 10-12. As much as I love dogs, miniature horses are so much cuter. If I ever saw one in person, I'd just melt. Sorry, nothing to do with grocery shopping. Back on topic ... Edited November 19, 2024 by BSR Added a sentence + sync and samhexum 1 1
samhexum Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 A local nonprofit is hosting an economic initiative for a Black-owned grocery store in Jamaica this Sunday. BlaQue Community Cares is hosting its BlaQue Cash Mob at Earnest Foods, an organic grocery store located at 123-01 Merrick Blvd, on Nov. 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A cash mob is a community-driven event designed to support local businesses by encouraging a group of shoppers to visit a specific store and spend a set amount of money, typically around $20. These events aim to boost sales, raise awareness for independently owned businesses, and strengthen community ties by promoting local shopping. Aleeia Abraham, founder of BlaQue Community Cares, said she has hosted over 6 cash mobs since 2021, including Earnest Foods. Abraham explained that cash mobs are held throughout Queens to boost community support for local businesses. “I think it’s important to really encourage local shopping habits and strengthen the connection between residents and businesses and black businesses, particularly in Queens,” she said. “And we’ve been doing this for a while now, and we found that it really helps the community discover new businesses that they might not know exist.” Abraham believes that the grocery store, which has been open since 2021, is an invaluable part of the southeast Queens community. “Earnest Foods really supplies the healthy food options that are hard to find in Jamaica,” she said. “Organizing this cash mob not only encourages people to shop, but it also shows our collective dollars, how it helps sustain business and directly serves and uplifts our community.” Furthermore, Abraham said that fresh produce can be hard for many Queens residents to come by. “There’s really nowhere to go in Queens, especially Black-owned businesses in Queens to find something healthier to eat. We have to keep those businesses open,” she said. “So someone has to just make everyone aware that these businesses exist and how to keep dollars in our community.” BlaQue Community Cares is a division of the BlaQue Resource Network, a community group founded by Abraham in 2019, which provides a space for Black Queens residents to network and share resources. BlaQue Community Cares supports local businesses through events, resources, and educational opportunities.

samhexum Posted February 1 Posted February 1 This One-Of-A-Kind Mexican Costco That Has A Unique Attraction In The Parking Lot While most folks head to Costco to pick up groceries and grab a hot dog, one Mexican Costco’s parking lot has been drawing crowds for a very unique reason. Costco is like the Disneyland of grocery stores with plentiful free samples, $1.50 hotdogs, and unique surprises like Chinese century eggs waiting to be discovered. However, while most folks head to Costco to pick up groceries, one particular location’s parking lot has been drawing crowds for a very unique reason — a cenote. Cenotes are a formation specific to the Yucatan peninsula, which was once a coral reef millions of years ago. As sea levels decreased, the now-dry land became pockmarked with cave systems and sinkholes. These sinkholes, which drain water into the many underground river systems, are cenotes, and they’ve become major tourist attractions. While there are an estimated 10,000 cenotes in the Yucatan, with only 2,400 documented, only one can call a Costco parking lot its home. Situated in Merida, Mexico, the location where the Costco now sits was once occupied by a Cordemex factory. When construction began on the new store, the factory’s warehouses were torn down, and the cenote was discovered. Named Ka Kuxtal, which in the Mayan language means “the one that got [brought] back to life,” this cenote has become a must-see for tourists in Merida both for its beauty and bizarre location. Plus, Costco has really dressed up the area around the cenote with a scenic stone garden surrounded by native plants. While the area is fenced off, so you can’t directly approach the cenote, the view alone is something no other Costco can offer. If you’ve already started planning your trip to Merida, Mexico, to take in this unique destination, you might want to bring your Costco card along (or make sure you have your digital card on your phone). Once you’re a member, your card will get you into any Costco around the world and it’s definitely not an opportunity to pass up on, especially since Costco’s food court items around the world can be pretty delicious. In Merida, specifically, you can grab some churros, a mango smoothie, and an iconic hotdog with jalapenos and onion. Although Mexican Costco warehouses don’t differ too much from those you’ll find in America, it can be worth checking out the tequila aisle, where you can sometimes find great deals, and stocking up on the cult classic Mexican Coke, even if the taste difference might just be all in our heads. In any event, snacking on a fresh Costco churro while hanging out by the parking lot cenote is a pretty cool experience, and it’s definitely not something everyone can brag about. Knowing this unique Costco exists certainly might make your local warehouse seem a bit bland, but don’t feel too bad. At least you still have great deals to look forward to!

mike carey Posted March 29 Posted March 29 I've just had an interesting grocery-shopping-adjacent experience. A couple of days ago I bought a pack of baby spinach leaves from one of the two big supermarket chains here that I have a loyalty card for. This evening I received an e-mail product recall notice for the spinach, in which they noted that their records showed that I had purchased them. The e-mail went on to say I could obtain a refund for the purchase, and that if I didn't have the receipt the e-mail could be used as proof of purchase. I'm still cynical about how they use loyalty programmes for data collection, but at least they also use it for our benefit at times. Danny-Darko and samhexum 1 1

I'm still cynical about how they use loyalty programmes for data collection, but at least they also use it for our benefit at times. One of my local stores emails me copies of my receipts. Thursday night, almost exactly 5 1/2 days after I went shopping there, they sent me a receipt from Saturday. I was supposed to get a package of McCain Quick Fries for free. They were NOT free… The store paid me to take them. When looking at the receipt quickly at the store, I thought the adjustments they made to the price of the fries included my one dollar in grocery bucks, but that dollar was taken off at the bottom of the receipt. They charged me $5.49 for the fries, then took off $4.99, then took off another $1.50. As a result, I paid 549 and they reimbursed me 649, in addition to the one dollar in grocery bucks I had deducted at the end of my receipt.

Neither of the two chains e-mail copies of receipts, but one (not the one I bought the spinach from) gives you an option in your loyalty account settings to opt out of printed receipts in the store, and instead access them in the account. It also updates your points and bonuses from the purchase instantaneously, while the other takes a couple of days to do it. Not that that matters in the grand scheme of things. samhexum 1
