Grocery Shopping

Just returned home from my weekly trip to the grocery. Took longer than usual as I needed to grab a couple of items from the pharmacy section and it has been rearranged since the last time I bought bar soap. The men's Dove soap had been moved to be located with the shaving items and not the other bar soap. While there was no toilet paper on the shelves, this week the other paper products (facial tissues, paper towel) were fully stocked.

I wore a mask (received in yesterday's mail from my mother who had made some) rather than the scarf I have worn out the last two weeks. It was surprising that nearly a third of the customers and half of the employees were not wearing masks.

As I drove home, I realized that I have not filled the gas tank since I started working from home five weeks ago. And I still have more than a half tank left.

I use a paper mask (a pack) that I received the other day. They were much more comfortable than what I had been using which were filter masks that workmen who had worked on the installation of my bathroom had fortunately left behind. In both cases however, as I wear glasses, every time I breath I fog up. So I just don't wear glasses. Luckily I see well enough to get by.

Stopped by my local Key Foods today - they are the closest grocery store. Still no flour, eggs or cleaning supplies available. They did have beer - bingo! ?

Where is your Key food, and have you found they have raised their prices ?? I've mentioned in diff posts my experience there, and them telling me "its supply and demand"..... Just wondering your experience with Key ?

Same fogging up the eyewear for me. While I did my shopping without glasses just fine, I'm not sure how long I would be able to work with foggy lenses if my office reopens to working on-site.

Thanks for posting this @TruthBTold ... I posed the "fogging" question a week ago and didn't get much response. I have the same problem and thought it had something to do with the way I wear my mask, which is pretty standard, over nose and mouth.... I can see without, but it's a diff foggy without my glasses. so I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't.

I just got back from running some errands and getting a doc notarized.

My pharmacy offering curb side pick up! Pulled in to the yellow loading zone in front of the pharmacy, give them a call on the phone with my name and a gentleman came out with my two prescription refills and took my cash I let him keep the change and I was on my way everybody wearing masks and gloves.

Small Mexican market chain here in Los Angeles area called Numero Uno. Not as large or widespread as Northgate which is a bigger Mexican speciality market, but there’s a Numero Uno very close to my house. I must say this is my second visit here during the pandemic, and they are pretty well stocked on all the supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, that are hard to find elsewhere. The prices are no bargain, but I got things I needed plus a couple Mexican spices and specialties for some cooking I’m doing. They had a security guard checking for masks and gloves and funneling everybody into one entrance. Plenty of social distancing enforced at the checkout lines.

My local butcher shop was open, all the gents there wearing gloves and masks...was really fun shopping there for the first time in weeks. “Where have you been??” they all shouted in unison when I walked in!

I've heard that if you fold a small piece of cloth or gauze under the inside top of the mask that it will reduce or eliminate the fogging. Haven't tried that yet.

My local store is in West Harlem. There are some items I have stopped buying; too expensive. Will stock up again when sanity returns.

TP must be rolling to stores again. This morning my Trader Joes had both their 6-pack and the new single roll stuff (for .59!).

That and the shitheads who bought 1,800 rolls have finally stopped buying more.

Today's shopping expedition was quite fruitful. Bought TP and paper towels at Target. They even had six of the quart-sized bottles of bleach and I bought one of them, as I am almost out. Safeway had almost everything on my grocery list. This week's random out-of-stock item was brown sugar. Neither Target not Safeway had any.

I'm having the same problem. I'll give it a try.

By doing this, you are breaking the seal and protection that the mask provides. If air can go out easily to eliminate the fogging issue, you better believe droplets can come in when you breathe in. It sucks. The whole reason why the mask work is because the air you're breathing is being filtered thru the mask material. Both coming in and breathing out. If you're infected, the mask stops you from contaminating the air around you when you breathe or god forbid sneeze. The average person does not need a medical grade mask (N95 or higher grade). If you observe social distancing. a basic fabric face cover is more than sufficient even though it provides just a fraction of the filtration effectiveness of a N95 rate mask Bandannas by their nature leave the bottom of your face exposed to the open air even though it flaps against your face. This is still more than enough protection for the vast majority of us. Unless you're in a confined space with no little air circulation (think waiting rooms, subways, buses, elevators, etc), most of us are not placing ourselves in places where you exposed to a high degree of risk. Even at a grocery store, you're not there for a super long time. Be aware of your surrounding environment and you will be fine with a basic face covering. When you get home, wash your hands and wipe down your phone and keys.

If the outing was a bit stressful, watch some porn to get your mind on more pleasant things. Wash your hands when you're done. You can never wash your hands enough right now.

Stood up through the night to get to Walmart at opening...scored store brand Lysol disinfectant, wipes, and cleaning spray ?

Now one more stop in an hour to try and score the travel size Lysol spray?

Jealous you found the wipes! It’s the one hole in my pantry that’s driving me nuts.

Any cleaning product that listed as killing 99.99% of bacteria/viruses is all you need along with some paper towels. Should be listed right on the front of package. Way more eco friendly than the single use disposable wipes which people think they can flush down the toilet and clogs up their plumbing.

Mike - How's the COVID situation down under? Here in DC, we've had a stay-at-home order in place for a couple of weeks and it's in effect through mid-May. Our per capita infection rate is not bad (compared to NY, Michigan or New Jersey).

Comparatively, we're doing really well, but we're about to go into winter and nobody knows how seasonal the virus will be. Except Donald Trump, and he knows everything.

We have lockdowns that will go for at least another month. Only essential trips out of the house, but shopping and exercise count. Restaurants and cafes are closed for sit down customers but takeaway and delivery is allowed, including wine from licensed premises. A lot of food outlets are being really creative. Schools are open but universities are not, but both are encouraging on-line learning rather than have students attend in person. Canberra is fairly liberal in what you can do, and the police haven't issued any fines, they've just told people what the rules are.

Australia has 6.5K cases and 71 deaths, and the trend is down. Here in the Capital Territory (population c400K) we haven't had any new cases in the last six days and we've only had 103 cases and three deaths.

Although we don't know for sure, probably the main reason to wear masks is to protect others, not to prevent infection in yourself. Unlike tuberculosis or whooping cough, which can be contracted just by breathing the air, coronaviruses and rhinoviruses are mainly spread through droplets which one touches from solid objects then contract the illness when one touches one's face. I would think that most masks, etc., would otherwise increase one's risk of contracting Covid-19, because it pretty much forces you to touch your face more often. The situation is even worse if you keep using the same dirty mask or bandana repeatedly (and masks are not plentiful enough for everyone to be changing them frequently). The mask is probably covered with droplets. The hope is that the masks worn in grocery stores will substantially reduce the amount of droplets covering every item in the store.

They made exercise "non-essential" here. While I understand why this applies to gyms they also made it apply to personal trainers where there may be only one or two trainers there who can clean off all the equipment their clients are going to use after each use.

With the on-set of winter, yes, your situation may worsen but who really knows. Perhaps your leadership should consult with our "very stable genius" in the White House.

Take care friend!
