Police from the 100th Precinct are looking for the suspect who allegedly assaulted an elderly man in broad daylight at a shopping center in Arverne last month.

Police say the 66-year-old victim was inside the Stop & Shop at 70-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd. just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, when a stranger who had been screaming and cursing at other shoppers approached him and struck him with her purse. The crazed woman proceeded to punch him in the face with a closed fist and then began biting both of his arms, police said. The suspect fled the scene running eastbound on Rockaway Beach Boulevard toward Beach 69th Street.

The victim sustained minor lacerations to his arms and was transported by EMS to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The NYPD released surveillance images of the suspect and described her as having a dark complexion with shoulder length braids. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black shorts, pink Crocs, a large blue backpack and she carried a white handbag.

One could use the system of defining 80 as a full year.  So elderly would be from Thanksgiving to the end of the year.  Each year is equivalent to 4.5 days more or less.  So 66 would be 14 x 4.5 or 59 days from the end of the year or Just past Halloween.  So not quite elderly because you are not really thinking about the end of the year until at least Thanksgiving.

As a result, I would describe 66 as autumnal.    BTW, autumn has become my favorite season as I have more Spring in my step than ever.

The average life expectancy in the USA is 79 1/2 years.  What is 66 if not elderly?

I was out on Block 16 in The Elmwood on Sunday; in its day, the most desirable "last address" for the "best people" and took note that, although there were exceptions, very few of the movers and shakers of their day made it to 70.

Of course, three score and ten or seventy was the biblical life span of 2000 years ago. But in western countries in the 19th and twentieth centuries many people lived well beyond that even if the average life span was shorter than today.
I remember visiting a German graveyard in Berlin and being astounded at the number of gravestones with ages recorded in the 80’s and 90’s in the 19th century. Then the 20th century arrived and many died between 1914 and 1918 at a young age.

Many HOA communities and homes for the Aged admit the elderly at age 55.

The American Association of Retired People (AARP) begins sending membership requests to the elderly at age 50.

My advice to feel younger:  "You're only as old as the men you feel!"

Organizations that need "elderly: persons for their business profits are not really the best guide to deciding what is "elderly".  I am what most would consider old but until a stroke a few months ago, I never felt elderly.  I am working my way back from there, going to the gym regularly and hiring as often as I like.  I no longer think of myself as elderly.  In fact, I am convinced I will be one of those people that when I pass, people will say that it was a shame because he was so young.  Among the people saying that will be many advertisers on RentMen, a few bold fellows on Scruff and Grindr and a few members of my gym.

Google search tells me:

Someone is typically considered elderly at 65 years old, as this milestone marks eligibility for Medicare and Social Security benefits. However, definitions vary: the World Health Organization broadly classifies individuals 60 and older as seniors, while the AARP begins offering memberships at 50.
Gerontologists and healthcare providers generally divide older age into three stages:
  • Young-old: 65 to 74 years
  • Middle-old: 75 to 84 years
  • Old-old: 85 years and older
Culturally and medically, "elderly" is subjective and often depends more on functionality, health, and independence than a specific chronological number.

That last sentence, in my opinion, makes a lot of sense. Therefore, despite the number of birthdays I've had I AM NOT ELDERLY. 😀

I got news for you... Stores put out Christmas 🎄 decorations in October, and all the best stuff is purchased by Halloween.  So by early October, one is already elderly and preparing for the end.  At just past Halloween, whatever is left in the elderly section is getting ready for to be moved to the clearance section 😉

A woman knocked up at age 35 will be designated a Geriatric Pregnancy.

We men need to simmer down.

OMG! That means my mother was an old lady when I was born! (she was 39, and I was her first child). I, on the other hand, believed in starting everything young: I came out as gay at 17, had settled down with my partner at 25, and retired at 60.

I can still remember my excitement when I found that Metamucil cookies also came in chocolate and not just in cinnamon.

Well, someone had to lead the way. Thank you.

Even in the 18th century, many lived into their 80’s and even 90’s. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both born before 1750 lived to be 90 and 83, respectively. The main drivers for extending life expectancy over the past 200 years have been clean water and effective sewage and reductions in childhood and maternal mortality, aided by effective vaccines in the 20th century. All of those early deaths skewed the mean life expectancy downward.
As a species, we have the genetic endowment to live past 80 and many of us are still kicking ass well past 65.

I do a lot of historical research and this involves looking at old census records. One of note I came across was the record of a man taken in 1861. His age was given as 106 and the census taker wrote “wow” in the margin beside the man’s name.
One of that man’s descendants was a second cousin of mine who lived to 98, dying after a fall in 2020. So the idea longevity is related to genes has some traction.

I saw my doctor today for my semi annual checkup and he said on paper I looked good. Based on my blood tests. !!!
I told him I felt less than perfect given my advancing age , 79, but I told his nurse I was still having sex on a regular basis.

I have an appointment to see him next January so that’s good. Just need to keep on truckin.

I realized I was elderly last year when for the first time in the subway a very kind young lady I was standing in front of offered me her seat.

At first I stared at her with a "HOW VERY DARE YOU??" look, then I bitterly smiled and accepted it.

A couple of months later  I became a Senior Citizen.
