Do most escorts normally tell their clients when they are planning to retire or make some sort of announcement in their ads that they intend to do so?

Usually an escort's retirement is announced via formal, engraved notices. A sophisticated script font - often Florentea or Modernline - is de riguer in the case of a long-time provider. Most times the retirement is accompanied by a dinner at the local Applebee's. The dinner is by invitation-only. Guests are limited to fellow providers, gold star clients, and family members. It is closed to the general public, i.e. no gawkers, groupies, or dinner crashers.
The typical retirement gift for the Guest of Honor is a gold watch. Sometimes a gag gift will accompany the watch, such as a leather belt with a notch in it for every client who made a substantial donation to the escort's kids' education fund.

Their ad disappears and they stop answering texts. The higher class ones sell their clients to another escort for a hefty sum and assume the clients won’t know the difference.

I would imagine they'd probably/maybe tell some of their longest time regulars they were retiring (just so they know or maybe even get a "one last time" in), but for the general public I'd think they would just delete their ad and vanish.

I had a number of long-standing regulars retire. Some told me ahead of time, directly. A few just dropped off the face of the earth with nary a peep nor warning.

For most, it has not been my experience, that there was some grand retirement announcement. One of my favorite providers publicly announced their retirement on this forum, but not in his ad. (There have been a few provider forum members (I've never met) who have also done so.)

Most do but only to their regular clients. Others prefer to fade away, stop answering texts, or have their ad deleted by RM, something that can't be undone. Some might post it in their ads or their personal website.

There have been many cases of escorts publicly announcing their retirement and later coming back to the business. Sean Xavier has announced his retirement and come back to the business at least 3 times.

I don't frequently see retirement mention in ads, but I do remember that two escorts I never met but who had excellent reputations on this forum retired within the past year or so and both of them announced their retirement in their ads on Rentmen for several months prior to their ads disappearing.  (One was Nicolas Mixx and the other -- whose name I don't remember -- might have been his partner.)

You say once their ad is pulled it can’t be undone but then say some retire 3 times and come back. Which is it?

When they "delete" their RM ad/profile that can't be undone.... that happened by mistake to a Hungarian escort called Gabriel, he posted about it on here, he possibly had a few drinks but might "butt dialed". There's an option called "delete your profile", if you have a profile in RM take a look and read the warnings. I guess it's the same for client's profiles. 

They can always create a new ad if later they change their minds and come back to the business. 

Again Sean Xavier at least retired and came back 3 times that I can recall.

Sometimes. Some still see a select few clients occasionally even though they've retired or moved on to other professions. But they will either volunteer such an offer and information or not. Either way the message is clear. I've never thought it prudent to ask if they would still me me after escorting.

Reminds me of those stores in NYC with fake "going out of business" signs for years....

. Sean Xavier also happily announced his retirements to get married, getting his degree, etc. and so far came back 3 times from his "retirement".

Oh WOW. I was not aware of Alec that far back. My memories of him are from around 2012 when he was living in the City of Angels with his then boyfriend Ryan. So that implies at least two retirements.
