I always check to see whether they have at least a 4.9 rating on RM (and I check the written reviews). I also examine what people have said about them on this site (if nothing is said, I might be hesitant to pay a deposit). Indeed, it is your prerogative to never pay a deposit. Just as it means you avoid some scammers, it also means you might not get to meet up with an honest provider who doesn't want to risk traveling quite a distance only for the client to block/cancel.
