Yes, I know that everyone here is not a US resident, so this thread is not for them. But I read today that Rosie O'Donnell has moved to Ireland and Elaine DeGeneris has moved to England. Of course, I wondered why. It gets too darn cold in those places.

Recently I was reading the Uruguay thread and it seemed like a nice place to live, except then @TrutthBtold said they didn't have the best medical care that old folks need.

So, maybe there is something wrong with every place. I love Bangkok...in early January. Otherwise it is too hot ad humid. Plus, I don't speak Thai. I could go to Rio but I don't speak Portuguese. Do I have to move to an English-speaking country?

Not that I am moving anyway, but I do love to fantasize about it. If I had to pick only one place, it would be Manhattan. And that's in the US! But I don't have the money for that. Say, does this forum have a GoFundMe section? 😊

If I remember correctly, the only language you speak fluently is English, so why not Australia? There is variety of climates (it's a whole continent, after all) it is gay friendly, and I believe they recognize same-sex marriages. And there are some experts from there on this very site.

Australia — on my bucket list. Always wanted to go, but never been. Almost went a few times. The long flight really holds me back. I almost went — don’t laugh — so I could see Sarah Brightman perform in Sunset Blvd last year. Not the only reason, but I was going to schedule a trip around that. Glad I didn’t - heard she was awful.

If I were in the position of Americans looking to move offshore, I would seriously consider Switzerland. I lived there for 4 years back in the 1980’s and worked there over the course of 20 years outside that period.
Switzerland is notoriously picky about whom they accept as residents so only a select few would qualify. But it has a high standard of living, a beautiful climate and gorgeous scenery both in and outside of its cities.
It helps to have a second or third language like  French or German. But English is widely understood.

I have several acquaintances who retired and emigrated to Portugal. Apparently it’s very affordable and there are beautiful towns by the sea. Then you’re already in Europe and can easily go anywhere. Personally, I’d rather move to Spain, probably Barcelona. For affordability, many retirees choose to move to Costa Rica but I don’t know much about the situation there nowadays.

Australia would be great, except that 98% of the wildlife there can kill you... lol.

I think I would choose New Zealand, given the diversity of landscapes and climates in a relatively small area, and it's high standard of living.  And the fact that you can survive most animal interactions there... hahaha

I would probably choose Ireland over England.  While it can be rainy and windy, it's also very mild due to the Gulf Stream.  And they are part of the EU and I believe they have a better standard of living than the UK.

I should have mentioned that all my Australian relatives made it to their 60s at least, before they were inevitably eaten by emus and wombats.

Or washed away in a flood, had their house burned down in a bushfire, or demolished in a cyclone. Truly horrible place.

Every one of those things - and all within the 24 hours before they were devoured by the monster bird and square-pooped marsupial.

Wonderful seafood!

Yes affordable but not so much for the locals who complain about wealthy people moving to their city instead of seeing it as a blessing
