How’s Your Summer Weather Part 2

The old thread I started in 2023 is now closed due to inactivity so I thought I would resurrect the topic. Reviewing the old thread, not much has changed it seems. 
Excessive heat in the south and excessive rain in many parts of the North American continent.  Currently it’s around 105f in South Florida which must be unbearable.

Here in Eastern Ontario it’s very pleasant this month. In July there were some super rainstorms but we avoided them in our area. In Ottawa thousands of homes were flooded Twice. 
 

Europe is another story. Five heat waves in Western Europe so far and the summer isn’t over. 
 

And of course wildfires in Canada and the PNW in the States. But back in 2023 that was also the case with smoke travelling down to the Eastern cities in Canada and the US.

So how are things in your neck of the woods?

100 F today, that is 9 above normal for this time of year.

It's a cold summer this year in Las Vegas.  Last Saturday, it didn't even break 100F.  Usually 110F is common for early August.

I'm ready for cooler evenings. We've had quite a number of evenings lately where it's not dropped out of the 70s at night.

I have found, through observation rather than any analysis of the relevant data, that it is not unusual for a prevailing pattern of weather to have surprising exceptions one way or the other. I admit it is usually for a period, whether long or short during a season rather than for its entirety. Living in an area that is an exception to the overall pattern of the season can be either a relief or a particular burden.

Also, I found the previous iteration of this thread, while it last operated, to have been interesting for me to understand the summer that was being experienced in North America, and to contrast or compare it with the winter we faced, a season that is rather milder than that which most of you face in six months' time. So, for the record, winter in Canberra has followed its usual course, mostly sunny but cold by Australian standards, with the usual range of mornings from frosty to simply cool. Last week I was in Melbourne, and the city defied its reputation of four seasons in one day and replaced that with a uniform grey accompanied by intermittent but frequent showers. Except for the sunlight finally breaking through as I watched the tarmac from the departure lounge.

Back in Canberra, it was 2 degrees overnight, and the first signs of spring are arriving with a forecast of a clear day and 18 degrees.

We’ve been regularly hitting 100 degrees F in Albuquerque which is highly unusual for August. Historically June is our hottest month. And the rain we usually get in August has been notably absent. So I’m hearing a lot of bitching about the heat. On a lark I drove up to Cheyenne (WY) last month thinking it would be cooler. Nope. 92 degrees F. And, I learned, that many homes don’t have A/C. July, I was told, was usually the hottest month but 92 for them was sweltering.

Barely ever hits 75 on the island. The PNW is lovely.

The heat in Palm Springs has been miserable this summer. The thermometer in my backyard got permanently stuck on 111F about a week ago; the predicted high today is 112. I had planned to drive up to visit a cousin in Wyoming at the beginning of August, but when I checked the forecast for my driving route, I saw that it was predicted to be over 100F almost every day along my route. So I told my cousin I would re-schedule the visit for October. Some people in other parts of the country say to me when I grouse about it, "Oh, but it's a dry heat." Then why are my clothes stuck to me as I sit here typing this early in the morning?

I found myself in Phoenix during a summer monsoon and commented on the amount of rain that was falling. My friends said, “Yes, Mike, but it’s a dry rain.”

There were only a few days in early August when there were slightly smoky skies, unfortunately. These pics are from last Tuesday looking NE towards Mount Baker and west towards the San Juans from Mount Erie. The prevailing NNW winds helped a lot.

I thought maybe the wind direction helped for those on the coast. Those further east and north got the smoke from the fires in eastern Oregon.

So far, a pretty normal summer in Michigan. One really hot spell in July lasted 3-4 days. Also in July, we had heavy smoke from Canadian wildfires for 4 days. It was so bad that it was suggested one only go outside if absolutely necessary. 
 

Currently, we are in need of some rain.

We’re in the midst of “fogust” in San Francisco. Gray, cool/cold, windy most of the day, though the sun might break through in the afternoon for a bit. So if anyone needs a break from sweltering heat, you’ll happily freeze your ass off here…

A great start a couple weeks ago in PTown (where it was mid 70’s) with a lovely young man was supplanted by return to NOLA where, we in the French Quarter will gladly ask any of you who think your summer is hot to - respectfully - HOLD OUR BEER!

Labor Day Weekend will be my first Southern Decadence.  I hope it’s mildly cooler before 250,000 gay men descend on the Quarter!   I might need someone to follow me around fetchin’ the ethers!

Fucking LA, it's been in the high 80s, and now 90s, since Late June.  Makes it impossible to enjoy the mountains which I'd normally be doing now.  Going to Catalina for the day for some relief but it's high 80s and the water is closed due to pollution.  Going to Hawaii soon too, forecast is also too fucking hot for this time of year.  San Francisco is looking better and better.

If the trade winds are blowing as they usually do, Hawai'i - the south side of Oahu, at least - is bearable, you don't notice the heat so much. If they stop, which can happen, it can be hell.
