OP: Rates of cancer among young people are consistently higher and keep rising year after year. Let's hope some high-profile diagnosis will help early detection. 

Sedentary lifestyle, obesity, alcohol, stress, suntanning, low fiber and high fat diet and specially the consumption of processed foods.

According to the article the main reason is better early screening technology, therefore more types of cancer being detected earlier.

Interesting statistic in the article was the cancer rate was going down in men, but up in women.  That is very similar to the change in workforce participation rates: going down for men and up for women.  I wonder if the stress associated with paid work is causing cancer, or there is just better health screening of those in the workforce than those not.

As more young adults are being diagnosed with early-onset cancers, like colorectal, locally, scientists are searching for answers as to why it's happening.

I just watched another segment on this subject in CNN.

It's also lifestyle, food choices, etc.

Basically, that means I'm dead in under three years.  

I love charcuterie plates but strictly limit the number of times I consume one. They are wickedly scrumptious but there in lies the peril. Anything so good cannot be good for your body. 
 

I make the same calculations about sex but admit I cave in to my desires more often than can be good, apart from the cardiovascular workout which I know is good and my doctor would at least agree on that point.

I''m lucky that all those cured meats upset my stomach so it isn't too hard to stay away from them - I do love an occasional slice of mortadella.

Funny, I thought all those were characteristics of the elderly.

Young people are not smoking cigarettes as much as their parents and grandparents did. So maybe lung cancer the major cancer of earlier generations will not plague them.

Certainly obesity is up everywhere and diet and lack of exercise are major contributors to cancers arising from those lifestyle choices. 
 

I’ve had my bout of prostate cancer 18 years ago and suffer skin cancers of the mildest form bcc from time to time because of suntanning when I was younger, which can’t be changed altho I avoid a lot of sun now. 
 

As we age tho cancer risks seem to increase. I have a female friend who is 4 years older than me and she was just diagnosed this last week with cancer in multiple places. They are doing an exploratory tomorrow to see how advanced it is. Up to now it was her heart which was giving her serious problems. And she is a woman who has been active all her life and did a lot of sports including tennis up to when she experienced the heart problems a couple of years ago.

I’ve noted for years that kids of my friends are dying from both aggressive and obscure forms of stomach in their digestive areas - primarily stomach and colon.   I never knew a kid with cancer growing up. And now I hear of teens/early 20’s getting these things regularly.  One friend’s daughter of 20 - a beautiful girl that I watched grow up since she was adopted as a baby - just died several weeks ago breaking the hearts of all who knew her!   These cases are not random and we have to do better at keeping the food chain clean and healthy.

Possibly, unfortunately it's very easy to think colon cancer is something else

One cancer I don’t hear as much about these days is Hodgkin’s disease. When I was young three schoolmates from high school had it in their twenties and died before reaching 30. My sister in law got it in her mid twenties but survived it and lived until her late 60’s.

All these people were very fit athletes and ate well. My sister in law was a university champion swimmer. I haven’t heard of anyone I know getting this disease young in decades.

They still do but the prognosis for long term survival is much better over the past 30 - 40 years.
