Titanic Submarine Situation

Hopefully they'll drain every penny OceanGate has to at least refund part of the rescue costs

OceanGate will declare bankruptcy and they will be embroiled in lawsuits from the passenger’s families & estates for years. The families & estates will get almost nothing unless there are somehow large insurance policies which is highly doubtful given the high-risk nature of the dive, plus they all signed multiple explicit waivers.  If negligence can be proved then it may negate the waivers, but there will still be the imminent bankruptcy filing.  Can’t get nothing from nothing.

the US Federal Government will be last in line & will never recover one cent.
We, the taxpayers will foot the bill for the rescue operation for obscenely rich people with extremely poor judgment.
Welcome to socialism that subsidizes the very wealthy - funny how it only works for them.  Even when they’re dead.

The same arrogance that sunk the Titanic took 5 more victims!

There's a reason why planes nowadays are built out of metal and not fabric and wood like a biplane.

Cheap submersible don't last!

Will this incident affect other industries trying to save money using other materials?

The pair of widebodies utilize composites in their build.

The CEO of the company that built the Titan is 1 of the 5 dead.  He obviously believed in his product even though he admitted to cutting lots of corners and breaking all sorts of rules in the development of the vessel.  I think of it more a case of an oversized ego desperate to believe his own hype.  But you're right, it's still false marketing, even if the seller actually believes his own bullsh*t.

I've been struck by the fact that while there have been many submersibles that have descended to the shipwreck since it was discovered (including this ill-fated one), that it was one named the Titan came to grief visiting the Titanic.

The ocean liner Titanic was sold as being " unsinkable" and this Titan was apparently promoted to rich tourists as being safe.

In tbe case of the Titanic, it was later discovered that there were many reasons to doubt it's safety, including the steps that were taken to cut costs in its construction.

We have yet to find out if anything questionable was done to minimize the risks in promoting this submersible. Time will tell.

I have read that these billionaires and the pilots were aware of the risks and that everyone on this expedition and on previous trips had signed countless waivers were repeatedly went through the warning on the risk of losing their lives. I agree with the OP. Their families should be billed.

Not all inventors are successful and not all their inventions are a financial hit that changes the world but picture a world without folks thinking, discovering and creating!

Imagine the world if the Wright Brothers have crushed? Picture all the Monday morning quarterbacks saying flying it's impossible.

and some follow messianic billionaires off a cliff, unfortunately some might do it just out of trolling or asking for attention

Am I insensitive that I don’t understand why everyone is so exercised over this titanic submarine? Honestly if they are found I hope they are handed a BILL! The amount of money and resources being devoted to finding five RICH people who engaged in reckless behavior vs the 500 people who were left to callously die off the coast of Greece is shameful.

100% agree. Selfish, entitled and dumb people. Know, foreseeable, foretold risk. Explorers!!! 500k a pop. Oops! Tragic for their families, no doubt.

According to that article: "Ultimately, composites are made from two or more different materials with different physical and chemical properties. When combined, they are stronger than the elements alone." If that article is correct, one is not losing strength while lightening the load.

Well, maybe tragic for some family members. Others may not be crying themselves to sleep 🤑

The control stick was like a video game console, just looking at that scared me. Plus, going down 13,000 feet in that tiny thing would be enough of a deterrent for me not to want to risk my life in it. I guess it didn’t bother the people who went in it, but it gives me the creeps.

I heard that the teenager on board was terrified.  Mind you, he was 19yo (I'm assuming that's legally an adult in Pakistan) and made the decision to go despite his fear.  Then again, when dad's a billionaire, it might be reeeeaaaally hard to say no.

No doubt, a few of those! I also heard that the son in the father-son pair was brow-beaten into doing it by wealthy dad for fathers’ day. Christ!

I'd be keen to read the full waiver that the passengers signed to see what the governing jurisdiction of the agreement is. Certain jurisdictions flat out ban such waivers.

If I were the lawyer in charge of the father's estate, I'd lie during the reading of the will & tell this heartless piece of sh*t that he was disinherited, just to watch him drop a 40-pound cow in his shorts.  Then a week or so later, I'd send him a text, "just kidding, LOL!"

Yeah, OK, I'd probably get in deep sh*t for a stunt like that, but it would he so damn tempting.

you wouldn't be checking your phone and posting in this forum while wondering what happened to your dad?

Me too.  I come back to the reality that humans evolved to basically live on land, which I guess means I should never board an airplane again or go on a cruise :( LOL

They probably have little in the way of assets.  Some of the parts came from . . . VTech, I heard. They make phones (landlines, if cordless) and kiddie toys. Take Me With You Zebra, anyone? Drop & Go Dump Truck. Oh, the irony!

That said, I can’t imagine their disclosures were adequate.

I'm thinking of the Challenger disaster in 1986 and how they discovered that the infamous O rings were the cause of the explosion. A small part failed which led to a catastrophe.

There is some speculation that a small area of the joint between the composite hull and the titanium porthole might have allowed a little seawater to enter which would be enough to cause a rapid decompression and implosion of the vessel.

In this scenario, death would have been instantaneous. As the saying goes "They never knew what hit them". That would be the most merciful ending, rather than say a depletion of oxygen and slow suffocation.

On this point, in a strange coincidence, the rivets on the Titanic very much lead to it sinking within a mere three hours:

"the wrought iron in the rivets contained three times today’s allowable amount of slag (the glassy residue left behind after the smelting of the iron ore). The slag made the rivets less ductile and more brittle than they should have been when exposed to very cold temperatures—like those typically found in the icy seawater of the North Atlantic. This finding strongly suggested that Titanic’s collision with the iceberg caused the rivet heads to break off, popped the fasteners from their holes and allowed water to rush in between the separated hull plates."

When the remains of RMS Titanic were discovered more than 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) beneath the surface of the North...
