Teachers in High School Showers

A random memory popped into my head today...

I know "coach in the locker room/shower" is a common porn trope, but I remember a time my HS freshman year in track (1978/79) the coach - a bearish guy in his 40s or 50s - used the showers with us after practice (late afternoon, not during the school day). No towel dance, he was there in the altogether.

He was also my civics teacher who I saw every day fully clothed.

I don't recall being surprised, beyond the same way we are when we saw teachers in the grocery, you know, simply out of context. Looking back, he could have waited an hour til we kids cleared out, but of course at the time nothing was as hypersexualized as it is today.

Maybe it was SOP at the time. Maybe he was an exhibitionist. Does anyone else have a similar 'gaf' attitude of teachers, coaches, or in college, TAs and so forth mixing with students? Was this behavior typical in the 50s-80s or unique to my experience? Guys older than me swam naked at the Y, what was typical then?

(Showers were compulsory for us and started in 7th grade.)

My memory is different and involved a coach who was instructing a HS freshman on how to shower after gym class.  The coach was dressed but the poor kid was naked but both were in the shower area.  I don’t recall if the coach ever touched the kid but I remember that I was uncomfortable with the the whole situation and glad it wasn’t me.  Back then in the 70’s, everyone showered together after gym class but I never felt awkward about it until then.

I get it, trust me, it seems very unusual to me too. That's why I'm asking. If other coaches did it I wouldn't know, I was a skinny thing and only did track. We had a swim team and the pool opened up like it did in "A Wonderful Life" but I didn't swim in high school. The teacher would have grown up around naked swimming in the 50s so maybe it was acceptable. I don't recall anyone saying anything. I certainly didn't, and if either through rarity or coincidence, I only saw it once.

I've seen a video of basic training for OCS that does this. I remember when we started showers in HS the gym teachers exhibited a quick shower and drying to speed the process and get you into your next class quickly, but clothed ofc. They then watched us, which I felt was creepier than the naked civics teacher, frankly. And to @Luv2play 's comment, we *did* comment that one of the two gym teachers seemed to leer. 

In middle school I was in a different province and there was no instruction or anything, just gruff "quit yer bitchin and strip" orders from a coach that had no patience for self concious pubescent boys.

I recall going to BIBLE CAMP in the 70’s (‘77 or ‘78) and the college-age cabin counselors would shower with the boys. Nobody thought anything of it. One counselor I can see in my mind to this day was what I now know was a perfect Castro clone specimen … even before I knew what a Castro clone was! (White briefs. Moustache. Dark hair. Hairy chest. Treasure trail.)  My own cabin counselor was a trim, taut hairy blonde guy with a big dong who didn’t wear underpants. Even the “visiting minister” showered with the boys; by day he was a nerd but naked in the shower he was a hot dude!  I think the 70’s were the last decade where boys were told that is was “OK” to be naked with other boys; that it was no big deal. Over and over I heard, “It’s just the guys! Get over yourself!” when we expressed trepidation about group showers and locker rooms. I used to go with my Dad to his father’s club and walk through the locker room filled with mostly naked men, a cloud of cigarette smoke and an ocean of Scotch. Sure, one looked but one didn’t point or laugh or stare too long. My grandfather would introduce me to his friends and everyone was cool. I get where the OP’s experience might suggest a certain “creepiness”, but given the time frame suggested I think it was just accepted as the norm. Looking back, do I think one or more of the adult men showering with boys to be a creepy voyeur? Yeah, probably. I guess as long as it didn’t go beyond showering next to each other it was all right. Or, at least, “not wrong”. I’m so f*cking old.

The locker room at my HS had an off-limits-to-students coaches’ area that was elevated above the locker room and had a long window that overlooked the dressing area and showers.  The coaches/ PE teachers often stood in the windows and watched what was going on below.  In hindsight, it was a little creepy ….

I went to a boys school starting in grade 7 when puberty was just occurring for many of us. Elementary school had not prepared me for this new environment as at the previous school we had no showers after gym. 
In this new school sports was emphasized which I knew as my two older brothers were ahead of me there in the high school section of the school. In the junior school I was separated from my brothers so had to navigate the new environment by myself. 
Having communal showers and being naked in the locker room was the standard practice. We had many teachers as coaches and the gym teacher too was involved in supervising showers. 
They never joined in the showers but were in the looker room and saw everyone naked. There were one or two teachers who the boys gossiped about being queer. This was in the 1950s but even then kids were ruthless in commenting on older men who had any effeminate mannerisms.

The first adult that I ever showered with, outside of immediate family, was with my counselor at “Bible camp”.

He was a college stud. We were smelly pubescent boys. We were told that it was mandatory to shower once a day in the group shower hut. On the first day, he joined us in the shower to show us “how to shower”. Honestly, at the time I was extremely thankful. No one had ever showed me “how to shower”. We are very clearly instructed how to wash our nuts, cocks and  asses thoroughly. It wasn’t sexual. It was just a matter of fact. All I really remember is some of the boys had scant pubes. Some had no pubes. And our counselor had a full manly bush.

That young man taught me how to “wash yer ass”. Thank you, Zach.

I just did a bit of sleuthing, the teacher retired from the classroom in 2003 and just coached a few years after that, but started teaching 10 years before I was there. So maybe 30s, not 40s, at the time. A long-timer in one school so clearly wasn't an issue, at least not a career ending one.

At the Boys Club of America in my youth, we all swam naked. A guard checked your wrists before you could enter the pool to see if you had dirt. It all seemed perfectly normal.

Despite having no teachers in high school that I would have wanted to see naked, I find this thread very stimulating.

I remember showering with the other men in my group nude in summer camp when it was our turn. I made a point of it to not stare at other guys' dicks or butts for fear of being accused of being gay, only to learn that doing that is the dead giveaway, since everyone else looked at everyone else out of curiosity. I also remember turning in for the night on the first night, one dude said it would be cool if we could each have a good-looking lady with us in our sleeping bags, and I chimed in that I didn't want one, so someone else could have two. Long awkward pause, laughter, and the "rhymes with hag" tag stayed with me. 

The camp counselors weren't showering but were looking at all of us to make sure we were all getting clean and not messing around by cupping and throwing water at others. Nobody thought twice that what they were doing was anything other than normal.

Right there! That’s it! Before the 80’s, by my calculation, it all seemed perfectly normal. Getting back to the original topic - teachers showering with students - I remember the Phys Ed coaches at my junior high and high schools showering with students at the end of their work day and except for my (silent) admiration of their hairy ample equipment I don’t recall thinking it was unusual. Nor do I recall them acting untoward. My first memory of a locker room is my Dad saying to me, “It’s just guys. Get undressed.” (Easy for him; my Dad was a STUD!) I’m old & fat now and I still think nothing of getting undressed in front of other men. Times have changed. I kinda get the “creep” factor of an adult male teacher showering with his students. But 40-50 years ago I thought nothing of it.

This wasn't the intent. It wasn't exciting. It wasn't sexual. Just a random high school memory that I found, in retrospect, a bit unusual as everyone seemed so blasé about it at the time, even me... intergenerational showering is typical and non-sexual, but looking back I'm surprised mostly at the implied power dynamic. It frankly smacks more of European sensibilities than North American ones, where nudity = no clothes, versus nudity = immediately spin up the Barry White LP.

(I never found showers or locker rooms stimulating anyway, even among guys my own age.)

When I was over 18 and in high school and university, I would purposefully go take a long shower in the afternoon after classes and linger as long as I could, just so I could catch a view of the occasional coach or teacher who would shower after school.  Fun times 😁

My 10th grade PE teacher gave us instructions on how to shower (and showers were mandatory after PE in those days) - make sure to get the neck, pits and crotch.  He occasionally showered with us and it was no big deal.  FWIW, 50 years later, when someone from the community FB group asks about best/favorite teachers, he is always on the list. 

I was extremely unathletic in my youth (much to my mother's chagrin) and I only took PE because it was a required class.  The showers were the only part of PE that I liked.

My 8th grade gym teacher was a former football player. This was the 1985-1986 school year.  Our locker room was separated in the middle by an office. On time I went into the office to grab a towel and teacher comes in from the other side, which also had showers, drying himself with a towel and his huge dick swinging around proudly. He looked at me but I pretended not to notice him and walked out of the office with a towel.
