If you could go back in time with $1B and hire anyone...

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this section of the forum but I just wanted to ask:

"If you could go back in time and hire anyone and you had $1 billion with which to do to with, what year would you go back to and what would be some of the now-retired men you would love to meet (or meet again that you've already seen)?"

thank you

A billion? I’m going back to the ’80s, renting a stadium, and holding open auditions… clothes optional. For that much money, I expect an encore, a standing ovation, and maybe a pulled hamstring or two.

hilarious!  🤣.  i had not really taken into account inflation!  Very curious to know what a billion in 1985 is worth compared to today.

Adjusted for inflation, a billion in 1985 is almost $2.9 billion today, which means I could rent three stadiums, double the auditions, and still have cash left over for matching silk robes and commemorative towels.

1985? I would want … insist … that all the prospective encounters convincingly treat me as if I’m all shiny and new, like a virgin fucked for the very first time.

I’m a realist. 1985 was a time when AIDs was spreading silently in the gay community in North America and Europe . I was living in Europe but visited the US frequently. It wasn’t a time to be promiscuous unfortunately and many of those who were soon disappeared from the scene. I lived through that and wouldn’t want to go back there.

Nobody made light of any historical tragedy, however close to home, by virtue of a random selected date. My graveside experiences in 1985 Toronto were not particularly silent and my erotic experiences not condomless.

The proposition put forward is surreal and defies the characteristic of being realistic. Fantasizing Waikiki Beach 1941 between Thanksgiving and Christmas for a hot servicemen gangbang, in the context of the deliberately silly premise would, similarly, not represent being tone deaf.

Let me be the first to say that I take the AIDS epidemic very seriously. I lived through it. I lived through it in a time when we didn’t yet have the language, the resources, or the treatments, just fear, resilience, and each other. I lived through it when funerals outnumbered birthdays, and every new headline felt like another punch to the gut. Many of us here have. I lost many of my brothers. To this day, I still insist on condoms with providers, despite our wonderful and ground breaking advancements. So I understand and respect the meaning behind your post completely.

That said, this whole scenario is so surreal it almost feels like a fever dream. A billion dollars, a time machine, and an all-access pass to meet the men of our choosing? This isn’t a post that’s begging for heaviness, at least not in my interpretation. I read it as pure fantasy, part absurdist wish-fulfillment, part “what if” daydream, and I played along with my fellow men. Sometimes it’s fun to just let the imagination go completely off the rails.

I totally understand that going back to the mid-80s there will have been the horrible crisis that existed at that time.  1985 (the year I was born) was a very very hard year for gay men because of that damn plague that took so many wonderful lives.  I often wonder, in the same hospital I was born, was there a gay man dying of AIDS in another part of it at the same time... the answer is probably sadly yes.

I think we'd all wish of course wish for a world where HIV/AIDS never happened.

[For this scenario, I was thinking more so in the 2000s and 2010s, and going online, such as to the old Daddy's Reviews site.]

I didn't see 'a billion' as being the figure to be spent on escorts, but rather it's a different way of saying 'if money were no object'. I also don't think it should be seen as possibly spending the lot on one or two escorts. We often read comments that $n is 'not realistic', but almost always they mean not realistic for the person posting, but the figure is almost invariably one that is quite realistic for at least some hirers. If you could find $2000 down the back of your couch, you could most likely spend that amount without blinking. If you had $1b, you could do it as often as you liked.

I’d go back to Ancient Greece and hire Patroclus and Achilles….I’m assuming they’d be open to such arrangements.

So … examples of some of the most retired  men as per the OP’s inquiry.

Perhaps without even the need to resort to filthy lucre the distasteful issue of money.

Aaah, was it after all a lucre-pincher for which the term Achilles’ heel was coined?

I understand what you mean, but my comment was purely tongue-in-cheek. I read the OP’s question as a playful “money no object” fantasy, not a literal accounting spreadsheet for escorts or a deep dive into ’80s realities. I was picturing an over-the-top, absurd, movie-montage scenario. Yet somehow, we’ve gone from that to discussing the AIDS epidemic with our hot tub time machine.

I would take the time machine into the future and make love to a powerful AI. It would be like the movie Three Thousand Years of Longing, in which the protagonist chooses to have a relationship with the all-powerful djinn.

I’m gutted if he isn’t available now.

@ApexNomad I figured your extrapolation to absurdity wasn't entirely serious but it provided a hook to post a comment. We often focus on the specifics of posts rather than more general point a question had been trying to ask!

I think it’s almost a type of conceptual “clanging”, though not pathological. Like if the hotel artisanal toiletries included a rope soap that then could be considered employable on the king size headboard with one’s hire.

I didn’t for one minute think that any posted comment was attributable to any fuddy-duddy who might be arbitrarily imagining the swinging 60s as their period of adult male peaking, but had assumed the Time Machine would not just be propelling my sorry old ass to the past while holding a device that might trigger a Cagney & Lacey SWAT team activation. 😏
