Tipping - if so, and how much?

Back in the old days I would tip, but now with everyone already asking for $400-$500 for an hour I don’t tip anymore, unless sometimes I know they took a long uber ride to see me. With that said I didn’t have issues with booking them again so I don’t think most expect a tip.

Most of the time these days they want reimbursement for the ride as well.

I’m a New Yorker so I always tip 20 to 30 percent. The weird thing is providers in New York are often surprised and appreciative that I tip, whereas providers overseas are often disappointed that I don’t tip more. Anyone else experience that?

I live in a city of the West Coast with unbearably high cost of living.  Hence, the providers’ average hourly rates rival those of NYC.  Regardless, I have been consistently tipping at least 20%.  Here’s my rationale: I normally book 2-hour appointments.  The providers almost always give a 15% to 20% discount when you book more than an hour.  In my mind, the 20% tips more or less cancel out the discounts.  It is essentially what they would’ve received had they not offered the discount.

That said, my providers do look surprised and delighted when I include that 20% tips.  It’s probably because they don’t expect anything on top of their higher-than-usual base rates.

I used to tip, and quite well, but as others have pointed out, prices have gone up, plus I was tipping because I thought that it was some kind of unwritten rule. Now I tip only certain providers, only certain countries, and only if they go extra (extra time, extra activities, etc.).

If the provider wants money up front never a tip.

If it's a legit massage with a professional i usually tip around $20 since they have to pay rent for the studio and do their own towels, etc, just like the person who cuts my hair.

Escorts I use to tip more regularly pre covid.    But since a lot of their rates have gone up big time, I usually don't now unless their rates are reasonable or they go over.

I set my own rates as a professional and my bill rate is only $275 an hour and I claim the income and have people to pay and rent and overhead and we don't expect a tip.   We adjust our bill rates appropriately
