I wonder if they will charge those which to attend Mass there vs. tourists?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The fee for entry has sparked backlash from the Catholic Church, which argues that charging for access to a religious space contradicts the values of accessibility and inclusivity. The issue is further complicated by France’s 1905 law on secularism, which prohibits charging for visits to religious sites. The Church has also raised concerns about the difficulty of distinguishing between tourists and worshippers, a distinction the fee would create. They argue that enforcing this could harm the cathedral’s mission to remain open to all.

"France’s Catholic church, however, remains strongly attached to the principle of free access for all"...

I was just in Strasbourg. They charged 5 euros to enter the Cathedral Notre Dame de Strasbourg (also Catholic). So I don't think this statement is completely accurate.

Personally, I think it should be a voluntary donation so parishioners can just enter freely. Same as the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. New York City residents pay what they wish.

The online info says that entering the Strasbourg Cathedral is free but there is a fee to see the Astronomical Clock and climb the tower.

I attended Sunday morning mass at Notre Dame a couple months ago. Although there was a long line of tourist waiting to get it, we (two of us) went to the front and said we were there to attend mass. They let us in right away; no ticket, no fee. Having been raised Catholic, I enjoy experiencing the familiar ritual of mass in other cultures and languages.

Ha! We were discussing how staff managing admission could distinguish between worshippers and tourists. We decided they should make everyone wanting to enter do the sign of the cross (quickly) and recite the first sentence of the standard confession ritual. Those who falter would be deemed a tourist. People like me (although no longer a practicing catholic) could do it my sleep.

Perhaps a sincere Act of Contrition would be stronger test.

Sounds sacrilegiously like a violation of France’s prostitution law.

5 Euros to enter the cathedral of our lady of Paris? Doesn’t help much, does it?

5 Euros tour fee? Doesn’t help much, does it?

Front end deposit? Doesn’t help much, does it?

Collection box? Doesn’t help much, does it?

First confession sentence: ‘Bless me for I have sinned.’ Redundant but may be the redemption ticket. Doesn’t help much, does it?

I learned, "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned" although now I might prefer, "Bless me, Daddy, for I have sinned."  🙂
