Everybody farts but how much is not widely known, apparently. A university in Maryland has undertaken a study to measure exactly how much humans expel gas via the rectum. They do it by using an instrument that can be attached to underwear.

I listened to an interview by someone involved in the study and the said 62 times a day may be an average. Some were recorded at over 118. A previous study had suggested 14 times a day average but was very limited in numbers subject to the trials. This new study will have over 800 people wearing the devices.

It reminds me of a standup routine Joan Rivers did once when she said self deprecatingly that as she aged she noticed she was farting more.
The university dubbed their study the Flatus Atlas. Should be interesting what they discover.

This is ridiculous.  Everyone's numbers vary based on their diet.  For example, I drink fifty gallons of Coke Zero daily (more or less) and my best friend drinks only water and a couple of cups of coffee per day; just based on that, how could any comparison of our gastrointestinal goodies have any validity?

It's a known fact that men fart more than women.

The theory: women never stop talking long enough to build up pressure.
