I also tend to pick my group carefully when it comes to inviting them to Kspa.  Not everyone is cut out for it.

I wish we had them.  When I first moved to SF, gay gyms were all shirtless. Even some mixed gyms were shirtless - when I lived in the East Bay, I trained at a 24-hour fitness in San Leandro that was shirtless - in the mid-90's. When I first started going to the gym regularly, in about 1975, YMCA's were generally shirtless, but that started to change as more women started frequenting gyms.  The women just weren't comfortable with a bunch of shirtless men.

It seems to me we're talking out both sides of our mouth here. First we say people are too hung up about nudity and it should be no big deal to be naked or shirtless.  It's just a natual body. 

Then we turn around and say just being naked is a sexual environment. 

So do you blame someone who doesn't want to be looked at sexually for not changing in public?

I would have averted my gaze too, not out of modesty but for fear of being traumatized.

Yet another downfall of society to mandate equal shared spaces for everyone.   And now there's separate workout rooms for women at some gyms! (I guess it's ok for women to be more equal than men).

Hopefully someday there'll be gyms which can tap the market for separate workout rooms for shirtless men.  Maybe call it a "Selfie Gym" where young shirtless men are encouraged to take selfies while working out.  It's amazing how many young men will do the towel dance in the locker room, yet have no problem posting nude pictures of themselves on the Internet.

I remember being concerned I would be naked in the shower, starting with junior high school.  Long time ago.  A shower was required after gym class.  I got used to it.

Years later at my health club no one seemed to worry about being naked.  

Come the Internet, did young men worry about being captured on video and displayed in the Cloud?  Or are they just not comfortable being ogled and cruised by so many out and proud gay men? 

I recall a straight friend mentioning there was no way he would set foot in the locker room at our health club.  He didn't explain, but I knew why.

I didn't read the Atlantic article behind the paywall.  I assume these days modesty has become customary.  I work out at home now, so have no first hand knowledge. 

Are the old timers  disappointed, how the opportunity to see fresh young naked bodies in the locker room is now a rarity?  That's also an assumption. 😉

To be fair, when the internet first came out there were a bunch of pervs who made hidden cam locker room videos in university gyms, recorded wrestling weighins, etc and put it all out there without people's consent. That wasn't something our generation had to worry about. Most of that stuff got shut down, but the fear remains. I'm fine being naked in the locker room, but I admit I'd be mortified if footage of me leaked out. When that influencer got banned for her locker room selfie where she shamed a fat woman behind her, i cringed. 

But basically "locker room predator scare" is the current "razor blades in Halloween candy" fear that persists despite not really being a thing. But stupid gym bros on TikTok keep it alive.

Another downside of shirtless gyms is sweat on the equipment.  Not all guys bother to wipe it down.

Simple solution for gyms:  Instead of requiring shirts be worn which covers the nipples (which does nothing to block sweat from the back), require shirts that cover the back but chest/nipples/abs can be exposed.  Apply this rule equally to men and women and watch gym membership increase!

The bootcamp type gyms both generally allow it and tend to be frequented by guys you might actually like to see shirtless. I walked past Solace New York the other night and I had to make a conscious effor not to linger.

That’s because dick pics are carefully curated.  In most dick pics, the guy is usually at least lightly erect, to give his member more girth and length. Then there’s angling and lighting to make it look good too.

I just looked the gym (and it’s history) up. 
Great concept that I personally hope grows back into popularity again. There’s nothing worse than some woman in the gym literally setting up to do bent-over squats directly in front of me, then acting as if I’m looking at her camel toe-enhancing leggings, when she’s the LAST thing I’d look at, ever….

When I grew up in the 1950s, not only was nudity the practice in the locker room and showers, but all swimming at the YMCA was nude…separate days for men and women. In those days, swim suits were wool with cotton belts. The cloth shed and gummed up the primitive filtration systems. So swimsuits were forbidden in the pool. No one thought anything of it. People grew up in large families with only one bathroom, so everyone grew up seeing siblings and parents naked. Kids from the country grew up swimming naked at the swimming hole. High schools and college dorms had separate sex facilities but it was always gang showers. Anyone who demurred would have been mocked mercilessly. Somehow the religious fanatics succeeded in convincing the current generations that the human body is sinful. I find that attitude sick.
