Parts of Canada are spreading them by 90+ days to ensure the highest number of people get their first shot as soon as possible. I understand that Pfizer provides 92% protection after the first, and the second raises that modestly to 94%, so that plan makes sense to me. We haven't had the same access to the vaccine as the US, with supply problems and logistical challenges.

That's true about parts of the country deciding to spread out the available supplies as much as possible. Quebec led the way over a month ago when it became clear the first shots were providing pretty good protection. Ontario followed this month and those two provinces account for over half the population of Canada.

Obviously if we had the luxury of adequate supplies we would be following the manufacturers' guidelines of a 3 to 4 week follow-up dose. But even in the UK, which is leading the G7 countries including the US by far in percentage of people with at least one dose, is only giving one dose at this time. I keep in touch with one of my escorts who lives there and he got his first shot a few weeks before I did but will only get his next shot he said in 3 months from the date of the first.

i got my first Pfizer shot on Friday. Went well with only a little tenderness in the spot plus yesterday a very mild headache but really nothing requiring a Tylenol. It passed quickly. I’m only scheduled to get the second shot in mid July so really not much will change for me until then.

I’m hoping the vaccine supplies will increase in June if the US meets its deadlines and they start to have surplus vaccine but who knows.

Wow. Mid-July is quite the gap. I go back for the 2nd shot on 4/18. Getting the appointment was brutal but once I finally had one it's gone well so far... So far, so good.

I can understand the logic of wanting to protect everyone somewhat versus providing greater protection to only some people when supplies are low. I know that originally the thought was that the first shot only provided about 50% protection but that was only looking at the first two weeks after injection. It's interesting that the protocol remains two shots if, in fact, the difference in protection is only 2% after more time has passed.

I'm not sure, but perhaps the second shot is more of a booster? Some studies indicate that a second shot may not be needed for those who already had covid antibodies, so in those cases the first shot acts as a booster. But I don't know if those studies have been peer-reviewed.

Ryan,

I read your update about your boyfriend's hair stylist testing positive for covid, and consquently you having to postpone your shot.

I hope

a.) That you don't get it via him from her

b.) That it isn't as brutal to reschedule ...

This is an interesting scenario. If I followed it correctly, it appeared that the hairstylist had already gotten both shots, yet tested positive. Is it likely that she is more of a carrier and will remain asymptomatic than to actual get sick herself? Can the BF who got his haircut from her, get COVID although she was fully vaccinated? These are the confusing factors for me.

The best laid plans....unfortunately my dog Bubba has been ill for awhile. He has a tumor called a chemocytoma which is a slow growing cancer near the heart. Its location causes him to go into heart failure and have his abdomen fill up with fluid. He needs to have the fluid drained every three weeks. I thought I could convince myself to leave him with a good friend or a relative, both of whom he knows. As time has grown closer, he has worsened and I am not sure he will make it through the week I was planning on being away. So unfortunately, I have cancelled my plans to attend. I hope you all have a great time. This is the second time I have had a last minute illness derail my plans to attend. The last time I was the one that was hospitalized.

With the fluid removal, this will be the fourth time, Bubba usually bounces back, but like a rubber ball, each subsequent bounce is not as high and not as strong.

I will be thinking of you.

More disheartening for some, I have told Vin Marco, that I have had to cancel our plans to spend the weekend together as he planned to accompany me to each of the festivities. Sorry guys.

I'm so sorry about what poor Bubba's dealing with. I wish him, and his human, all the best.

So sorry to hear. Will miss seeing you, but I would have done the same had my dog Atlas gotten sick.
