ESSENTIALLY”.     Not a necessary word, essentially

I disagree. Essentially is a very useful word. As a preface to what follows, it prepares the reader or listener to focus on the key message about to be delivered.

There is much discussion above concerning various words and/or phases that some deem inappropriate of overused.

Let us not forget the famous book that many of us were required to have during our education - Elements of Style:

This is not an overused or empty word, but I can’t believe how many people don’t know the difference between “to” & “too”. It’s  “to” bad they missed that class in 3rd grade.

Yup - the to/too problem, also their/there/they're, and any other number of homonyms.

Phrases heard on commercials:

"Caller, click now." (I know it's supposed to be "call OR click now" but it never sounds like that.)

"Home and auto bundle"

"Do not take [prescription drug advertised] if you are allergic to [same prescription drug advertised]." (Well, DUH!!!!!)

"Adorable" (used to describe the "special gift" of a blanket or stuffed animal, etc, that you get if you contribute to the advertised organization).

Athletes, performers or competitors in any competition who state that they are just going to "have fun," as in "I'm just going to go out there and have fun." What, you don't want to win or perform well? Folks aren't paying high ticket prices or tuning in just to see you "have fun!"

It especially annoys me on home-shopping programs where every house is cute

I don’t mind it @prof And I quite like it when the house has a “cute” bare-chested young gardener 😎

Adding "tax-smart investing" to the list.

Best not to go further down this track!

"Way down Hadestown
Way down under the ground
Hound dog howl and the whistle blow
Train come a-rollin, clickety-clack
Nobody knows where that old train goes
Those who go they don’t come back
They go way down Hadestown
Way down under the ground"
