I met Ralph Fiennes in London in the winter of 2004 under some rather unusual circumstances. I used to spend a couple of weeks in London in either January or February attending several theatrical productions and doing some shopping during the winter sales. At the time I was definitely not Fiennes’ greatest fan which was based totally upon his film appearances. I particularly disliked him in the “English Patient”. However, I had a friend who absolutely adored him. When I was in London in 2003 he was appearing as Carl Jung in the play “The Talking Cure”. I decided to attend if for no other reason than to make my friend jealous. His performance was absolutely mesmerizing. I was absolutely blown away. My entire opinion of him changed. Now fast forward to the winter of 2004. At that time Helen Mirren was appearing in Eugene O’Neil’s “Mourning Becomes Electra”. A very, very long play, like four and a half hours, and at times a very, very boring one but I wanted to see Mirren on stage. I purchased an excellent orchestra seat. No sooner did I take my seat than who should come in and sit directly in front of me – Ralph Fiennes and his long time female companion. At the first intermission I greeted him and he didn’t seem pleased. I apologized for interrupting but explained that all I wanted to do was tell him how much I enjoyed his performance the previous year in “The Talking Cure”. His demeanor changed immediately. We struck up a conversation regarding that performance and I mentioned how much more I enjoyed him on the stage than in a film. He absolutely came alive. After a few minutes his companion said she had to go to the restroom to which he responded simply - go. He mentioned several times how pleased he was that I so enjoyed his stage performance. He also commented that making films was the way he earned the money to be able to afford his great love – the theatre. When the lights flashed indicating the end of intermission I apologized for keeping him so long. He immediately responded that I hadn’t kept him and how much he had enjoyed our conversation. When the play ended we nodded to each other, said good night and he repeated how much he had enjoyed our talk. A most interesting evening.

I wonder if celebrities ever tire of smiling and posing with photos with fans/strangers? Somedays I don't want to deal with anyone -can be moody. I don't know how I would deal with being famous and always having to deal with strangers.

Perhaps it takes a certain personality-I am more of an introvert. Maybe extroverts revel in it? I can't imagine being famous-it would drive me crazy!

I think it was Jonny Depp that said something along the lines of "I get paid $1million to act in the film, and $5 million to put up with the fame."

Let’s see:

-Slept with Kim Catrell. Well, she slept behind me on flight to Paris in biz class

-Bob Balban, had a nice chat at Staples. He shared a bit of gossip about Julian Fellowes. Bob is part of the Christopher Guest series.

- Richard Kind. An Upper West Side fixture.

Wait for it....

-Mason Reese driving a 2 seat old folks buggy with his porn star girlfriend/wife? On the back texting showing off her orange legs, bust and face. This wasn’t so much a sighting, but more of a PTSD event. To make matters worse, I was eating lunch at a sidewalk cafe. He looks exactly as unfortunate as you remember. But older and worse

I was as officer in the Private Banking Department of a New York City bank and had several as clients. But my lips are sealed. They were all rather pleasant by the way.

I will break my silence WRT one particular client (not directly mine), the late Rusty Staub, La Gran Orange. He was from New Orleans and I think his playing days were done. He opened a Cajun restaurant up on Third Ave. Every major holiday he’d personally lug in trays of great food from his place then sit down have a leisurely lunch with everyone who made it into the lunch room from clerks and tellers to the department head. A real Mench!

A few years ago, I attended a luncheon where several people were honored for their work with neglected children. My mother was an award recipient and I sat with her at a table near the other VIPs. “Here, darling, I want you to meet Nancy, my new friend. Nancy, this is my son.“ Yep, it was governor-at-the-time Mike Pence’s momma. Sweet lady. Betcha’ can’t top that one!

Oh. Years ago Robin Williams on a Saturday afternoon in the basement electronics department of Bloomingdales looking at TVs.

Oh oh and Alan Alda in line behind me at Gracious Homes on Broadway.

My uncle has an Alan Alda story. He once saw Alda inside a store in NYC from outside the store but, as much he was a fan, didn't want to go in and say hi. Later that he day he ran into a former Chief Justice of the NYS Court Appeals he knew because they are both from the same town and she told him he should have gone inside to say hello.

My one celeb story is kind of ironic. My uncle, mentioned above, is always running into famous people in Manhattan and telling me his stories. One time we were in cab going to the Carnegie Deli, and he was telling me about another meeting he had. I spent the rest of the cab ride complaining about how I never see anyone on the streets of the city. When we get to the deli, I open the cab door and there was Tom Poston and Suzanne Pleshette waiting to get in our cab. My uncle tried to pass it off as if he had planned it the whole time. Nice people, they were.

Skipper from Gilligan's island. Red Skelton. Carol Burnett. Whoopi Goldberg both in and out of character.

Plus one very special person that I miss a lot since his passing. He was a silent member of our group. I begged him for years to

come to Palm Springs where everybody would protect his privacy. Just a reminder that "celebrities" are among us.
