*AZ Law Change Warning

Careful out there:

Arizona is now the eighth state in the country to treat paying for sex as a felony on a first offense. Beginning in September 2026, anyone who pays, agrees to pay, or offers to pay for sexual conduct under a fee arrangement can be charged with a Class 6 felony that carries mandatory jail. 
 

 

HB 2720 rewrites how Arizona punishes the “demand” side of prostitution. Previously, both buying and selling sex were charged as misdemeanors under A.R.S. 13-3214. Under the new law, the buyer’s conduct is elevated to a felony:

• Paying, agreeing to pay, or offering to pay for sexual conduct is now a Class 6 felony.
• Mandatory jail on conviction: 15 consecutive days for a first offense, 30 days for a second, and 60 days for a third.
• A $200 assessment that funds anti-human-trafficking programs.
• The law takes effect in September 2026.

Buying vs. Selling: Who Faces the Felony?

HB 2720 targets buyers, not sellers. Selling sex (prostitution and solicitation) remains a misdemeanor, and the law also requires courts to seal prostitution records when a conviction is vacated because the person was a victim of sex trafficking. Arizona has shifted the harshest penalties onto those who create the demand, while adding protections for trafficking survivors.

Besides Arizona and Texas, what are the other six states?  I couldn't find anything on a basic Google search.  Thanks

I get the whole legality part of this, but what are rules that you follow to stay as safe as possible?  I am specifically referring to sites like rentmen and rent masseur, donation methods, communication methods, etc.

There are locals from both sites that have a long history...are they considered "safe"?

Thank goodness I don’t live in one of these states. I feel for folks who do live in these areas.

Regarding new providers,  I wouldn’t necessarily rule out the seeking of non-regulars.

 Guys you haven’t seen yet and who are well-reviewed should always be an option, especially when their accounts are many years old.

America is a pretty barbaric place, with backward states like AZ, FL and TX leading the way. Felony in all three, for no good reason except the mega churches need to posture.

I don't understand the logic beyond making the payer criminally liable, but not charging the receiver, who was the one who created the financial exchange in the first place.

I asked AI to do a 50-state review, and it found 7:  Arizona, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas.  NC for soliciting; Illinois for patronizing.

(Texas prosecuted about 1700 johns in 2022 and again in 2023.)

More often than not, the payer is pursing the provider.

I did a subsequent search on AI as well and found the following results:

1st Offense charged as a Felony - Texas, Arizona

2nd Offense charged as a Felony - Georgia, Illinois, Nebraska, Florida

3rd Offense charged as a Felony - North Carolina

4th Offense charged as a Felony - Pennsylvania
