There will always be someone somewhere who would get down on their knees for him with no questions asked. I was in a public place, looked around, and said that very thing to myself. Saw an extremely handsome man, about age 35, tall dark and handsome, wearing shorts, hairy legs yesterday in the grocery store. Very straight, no doubt. I immediately thought of how much money he could make if he wanted to in the service business.

I can understand bottoming for them, but how do they get an erection and perform as a top for a guy they don’t like? I've wondered the same thing myself. I think it takes a special kind of guy, which is one reason why there are so few escorts.

I didn't grab the book from the WeHo bookstore A Different Light because I was curious about escorting (or porn), it was one of many I grabbed for the trip, along with a couple Edmund Whites, it just happened to have an enticing cover. It lead to 20+ years of escorting. I suspect most men don't think of it. Before reading that book, I had absolutely no idea escorting was an option. When friends and I chuckled at the ads in the back of Frontiers and Unzipped, it seemed entirely too risky and scary to even think about. Come to think about it, without the ads in the back of magazines, which don't exist, how would you even know about the world if you weren't looking for it? Crazy, I never thought of that till now, the loss of the magazines and the scary/sexy ads in the back and what that means. Thanks for sharing your insights from the provider end of things. Decatur Guy Posted 23 hours ago Author Posted 23 hours ago (edited) I appreciate all the thoughts and insights on this. I've also wondered at times: If I had been more attractive in my youth, is this something I would have done? I just wasn't good-looking or buff enough to even make it a viable option. But would have overcome the other barriers? I have no idea! Maybe it's a good thing that only a relative few guys were cut out for this. I might be broke otherwise. That's how I first discovered erotic massage from men was an option: the ads in the telephone Yellow Pages and in the back of local gay magazines. It's crazy to think that those are gone. Sure, the Internet is out there, but the Hookup Apps and AI work hard to hide these opportunities from young people who could benefit from career guidance. ICTJOCK Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago Well I know I never considered the idea of being an escort. It never occurred to me until 3 friends suggested it and gave their reasons why I should give it thought. I think it was a year after that I was ready to go and give it a shot. It was a good start and I had support right from the beginning. + KensingtonHomo, thomas and + Vegas_Millennial 1 1 1

BuffaloKyle Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Even porn stars have quit rentmen due to how crazy that can be with flakes and game players so if guys don't wanna get into escorting I can understand why. The first thought always that comes to my mind when I see a hot guy who is in need of money is dude go on chaturbate and make some easy money. j r 1
sunnysideup Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I met this nice Kiwi guy, 19. He just moved to NYC and was short on cash. Saw him a few times, all sessions were excellent and I still think of our encounters. He ended up stopping and said "it's not worth it''. Once he got a full time job, I think that was better income for him rather than selling oneself.

Once he got a full time job, I think that was better income for him rather than selling oneself. I think there are a lot of young guys who are in your Kiwi's pre-employment situation. NYC is expensive and a lot of young people (even many with full-time employment) either can't or can barely make ends meet. I'm sure a lot of them wouldn't mind a little side gig with an older guy. I think that's true with both gays and straights. Young people today have a very different view of homosexuality than they did when we were growing up. They all have and hang out with gay friends, and (so I'm told) many so-called straights have had experiences with and sometimes sexual relationships with those friends. So they're not afraid of or offended by gay sex, and with enough interest (and monetary incentive) some would be willing to consider providing that service regularly to one or two carefully chosen clients. I hesitate to use the term 'escorting' for this because it's not what we think of as offering a wide range of services to the public to earn a living, which I think describes most of the guys on RM. The problem is how (if you're one of these young people) to find a potential client. Going on RM or Seeking is WAY too public and is expensive and inefficient for finding one regular client. The apps police against it (and there's lots of noise and scammers on them) and sitting in a bar/public place and trolling for clients is dangerous from a safety and legal perspective. It might happen randomly (e.g., a diner soliciting a waiter as we were leaving the restaurant - I've seen friends be successful in this), but that's a very inefficient way to find a client. So, even those guys who are interested are frustrated in finding a client in a discreet manner. Oh, for the days of Craigslist, when it was easy to find these guys without too much noise or too many scammers. Edited 4 hours ago by jackcali Peter Eater 1

Nope. It’s an old but false saying, uttered by an outrageous anti-government racist annoyed by civil rights interventions. When your house is on fire, it probably won’t be a thought that comes to mind when the fire trucks pull up and the firemen jump out to hook up their hoses to the city hydrant. + Vegas_Millennial and + KensingtonHomo 1 1

mtaabq Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago Truthfully, escorting is hard work. It’s tough. Initially I wasn’t so much an “escort” as I was a “kept boy” so my perspective is a bit different. I was in my early 20’s, thin, good-looking and working full time (this was the mid-80’s when minimum wage was $3.35 a hour) when I met a really great and very attractive man on a phone chat line. (Remember those?) He and I clicked and pretty soon he was paying my rent in exchange for my availability weekday afternoons. My thought was, “Really? I get to have sex a couple of times a week and Dude pays my rent? Hell, yes!” There were no trips and no luxuries; I was expected to have scotch and cigarettes on hand as well as to be prepped and ready for a couple of rounds in the bedroom. Within a couple of months he would arrive with a friend, whom I was expected to accommodate. Another month or so after that he was sending friends to my apartment and expecting me to entertain them. I was not attracted to many of these men and I was told that I had to be available pretty much from Noon through the end of the work day Monday through Friday and, occasionally, weekends. (I still had my full-time job.) I always saw my guy at least twice a week and maybe one or two other men would stop by. When one of his “friends” introduced hard drugs into our scenes (specifically, cocaine) I put a stop to the activities. (Cocaine scared the shit outta me.) Dude warned me that he’d have no problem replacing me, and I’ll admit getting my rent paid was really nice, but something told me it was time to quit. I tried escorting after that but it was quite different having to drum up business or hustle or having to turn down bookings given my full-time job. And I’ve never been a good salesman. So that didn’t last long. Given this experience I have a lot of respect for the guys who choose to escort and do sex work. polysome, + Vegas_Millennial, MikeW and 2 others 3 2

I was never in this exact position, but I dated a very wealthy man when I was 20-21 (he was around 30 and had family money as well as a successful business). While he never paid for me to live, he did take me to luxurious places and spend money on me. Having grown up poor with a single Mom, I was always anxious. And while he never said I was replaceable, he hinted that my looking as I did then was non-negotiable. I was savvy enough to realize this relationship had no good future. How can I have a long-term relationship with someone who won't let me age? I also had offers to escort (I had friends doing sex work in college) but I was too afraid of HIV to go through with it. I would probably do it if I were in my 20s today. + Vegas_Millennial, mtaabq, thomas and 2 others 4 1
