pubic_assistance Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 (edited) Personally...I think the hysterica surrounding the upcoming changes in immigration and asylum seekers is a.lot of rhetoric and posturing. In practice, rounding up thousands of people and deporting them is not easy or even practical. What everyone seems to leave out of this conversation is that the incoming administration has also promised to streamline immigration making the idea of "illegal" more specific to those who are here, without contributing to society, selling drugs, and/or not paying taxes. My housekeeper was illegal for many years...but she and her husband paid taxes for a decade in spite of overstaying their visa..This got them preferential treatment when they did finally apply for citizenship, through sponsorship. That income tax money is a big key to the difference between illegal and legal status. + keroscenefire Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 I do think it will also be much harder for newer immigrants to come to the US. Seems to me somebody from some of those households are able-bodied citizens who could take over a few of those jobs ...The overarching problem of cheap labor is one of taxation. If they would reduce the associated labor costs to American employers, they wouldn't need to exploit undocumented labor from poor countries. I know some escorts who have overstayed their visa for decades doing a very profitable business while wiring money back home!
