I read some of the changes to make it worth it but you're going to have it still be a tough sell to people who just casually will buy one ticket when it's a big jackpot to suddenly tell them that'll be $5 and not $2.

The price difference must factor in losing some players when the jackpot is lower but makes up the difference with many more people drawn to routinely higher jackpots. $5 and a dream.

Considering that lotteries are taxes on the poor (the poor spend the highest percentage of their income on lottery tickets), anything that would discourage the poor from buying a ticket, including raising the price, is a good thing. 😊

I agree if that actually happens, if those with less means stop playing regularly. But if those who already can't afford to play still play because of a bigger attractive jackpot, then they are in a worse financial position.

I also support any measure that discourages the poor from buying lottery tickets, but I wonder if the jump to $5 results in the poor spending the same amount per month but just buying fewer tickets. 

The thought of poor people "saving up" because the price of tickets went up 150% breaks my heart.  Yes, it's voluntary, certainly no one is forcing the poor to spend what little they have on the lottery, but I also think it's wrong for the government to exploit human vulnerability.

I tend to think of the lottery as a tax on people who aren’t great at math. That said, I have to admit, I do buy lottery tickets about once a week. I’m always impressed when I see people, folder in hand, spending $50 - $100 on tickets; it kind of makes me feel a little less guilty about spending a few bucks on one myself, LOL!

A well spoken colleague described playing the lottery as a cheap fantasy.  With that lottery ticket in hand you could fantasize what your life might become as a multimillionaire.   For $5, $10 or $20 you can enjoy imagining all the exciting things you would do. 

Some people claim they would use the money for good.  OK!! 😉

But back to the OP, if you have a favorite provider you want to spend a chunk of $$ on, perhaps one you have a small crush, then as a newly super-rich guy what all might you plan to make that next hire memorable for the two of you.

The guy in Altadena that won the $2 billion prize bought two large homes, an antique Porche and is hanging out with a glam insta- model.  That's a nice start!  When you think about it, 2 billion goes fast.  I hope he puts some aside.  🤣

Unfortunately, that is not an option if you bought your ticket in California.  Apparently the state wants the public to know that real, everyday Joes (or Edwins) win those big jackpots.  From the CA Lottery website:

The California Lottery is subject to public disclosure laws that allow access to certain governmental records. Your full name, the name and location of the retailer who sold you the winning ticket, the date you won and the amount of your winnings, including your gross and net installment payments, are matters of public record and are subject to disclosure. The Lottery will not disclose any other personal or identifying information without your permission unless legally required to do so.

What sort of suggestions would you make for collecting the jackpot anonymously?  Not that I would ever win, but if I did, I would like to remain anonymous.  With $628M a person could live like a king on the $28M and its interest, and give away $100,000 to 6,000 different charities or organizations.  That would be a dream.
