Any good Netflix watches?

Recommended Posts

I hadn't watched Netflix much before this, but I found a couple of foreign series on there.

1. Baby, an Italian series. The blurb says, "Wealthy teens at an exclusive high school in Rome lead a dark secret life at night." I had hoped this would be something cool like arms dealing, but no, it's just a paid sex and selling pot. Everyone's sellin' ass and paying for it, including a new teacher. Until the second season, no one seems to realize that underage sex trafficking is a crime. The nasty high school bullies, many of them annoyiing closet cases, are always blackmailing everyone. The pimp threatened to kill one of them but unfortunately never came through.

But it's not all bad. In the world of Baby, the clients and even the pimps are gorgeous. There's also a coming out storyline involving the headmaster's son.

The soundtrack is all cheesy pop. Someone gets beaten up and a some song called "Havin' a bad day" plays. It's a reasonable Covid watch though. As in Grease, the actors are all in their 20s.

2. Shtisel, an Israeli drama about an extended ultra-religious family in Jerusalem. I've rewatched some episodes. The writing and acting are excellent, and the lead actor is hot. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed sexy and glossy El Club (upper-class young Mexicans deciding to dabble in the drugs trade, with a young gay character) and thrilling and exciting Fauda (Israeli undercover agents operating in Palestine).

I assume you’ve already watched Sex Education (UK/US setting for a high school where the son of a therapist decides to offer advice). Very funny and entertaining.

I reviewed the three series in the "Binge Watching" thread, but my favorites on Netflix are:

1. Velvet. The impossible love between the scion of a house of haute culture and a poor seamstress, Madrid circa 1960. The romantic drama is the best I've ever seen, and the 1960s styles are so much fun. The first 2 seasons are brilliant, the 3rd pretty good, the 4th is sh*t, but you gotta endure it to find out what happens.

2. Élite. A Madrid version of "Beverly Hills 90210" with a murder mystery to boot. It's great sudsy fun, and the sexy cast shows a lot of skin. The show features my favorite gay couple on TV.

3. Money Heist. This is the most popular series on Netflix, quite a feat for a non-English language show. A group of criminals take over the Royal Mint of Spain to print out €billions & run. Part action flick, part thriller, somewhat surreal, and tons of fun.

4. Palm Trees In the Snow. A woman finds a mysterious letter after her father dies, which leads her to go to Africa in search of a brother she didn't know she had. A bit long (2h43m), and the beginning is a bit slow, but it's worth watching in the end.

These two Spanish series are great fun. Elite has some very sexy moments.

I would also add Unorthodox, and I think that Pandemic is a very interesting watch in these Covid times. It was produced and released before our current Coronavirus explosion, and it is eerily prophetic.

Sex Education:

Story follows a teenage son of an acclaimed sex therapist, who becomes an armchair sex guru for his classmates as they explore their sexual identities.

Kingdom:

Story is set in Korea's medieval Joseon period where a crown prince is sent on a suicide mission to investigate a mysterious outbreak that leads him to a brutal truth that threatens the kingdom.

This was recommended to me, but I was told to watch Unorthodox first.

Kevin Slater

I watched the first couple of Unorthodox episodes and found it kind of contrived. Unorthodox's lead character pretty much plays the same character in both series.

Bloodline - Recommended to me by a London escort. Set in the Florida Keys, it's the story of a seemingly respectable family with a dark past - and, it turns out, an even darker future. It's one of those stories where the efforts to conceal bad acts lead to more bad acts and eventually spiral out of control.

Also Ozark Season 3.
