I’m making provisions to stay in my own home when the time comes, no matter what.  I’d rather have a shorter life than the quality of life in assisted-living, even in a very good facility.  The most important thing is to have a home where aging in place considerations/modifications are ready before needed.
fyi - the business model for any sort of assisted-living care is built upon an average stay of between 18-24 months and almost always less than 36 months.  In other words, you will die there quick.

One of the problems we have is we try to keep people alive way too long when the quality of life isn’t good & it just looks like prolonged suffering in a slow & inevitable decline.
Death isn’t something to fight or be afraid of. It’s the natural progression & ideally in old age, the end of a life well-lived.

Try to overcome your misery, @augustus, and tell me where I said that every single cousin takes care of my family's elders. I said that every single elder in my family has been and is taken care of, and spoke of an army of cousins, all facts. Perhaps the difference s above your head, but I understand if it is beyond your understanding. As I said, you reap what you saw., poor thing.

correct - American society, institutions, infrastructure, etc are in decline.
the broader economy as measured by traditional metrics is doing just fine.
there is no recession, there hasn't been a recession and recession is not in the foreseeable future
the biggest threat to the American economy is political instability.  If something happens where the US is no longer regarded as the safe-haven for global investment & deposits, then all bets are off.  Be careful what you wish for.

So funny to see how some posters want to transition this thread discussion from a potential recession (that still hasn't happened) to being a discussion about personal and national debt.  I guess if you can't win the one argument then...presto chango...switch to a different topic.
The national debt has been many decades in the making...under many administrations.  Neither the current nor the prior administration have been nor were concerned with the ever-burgeoning national debt. Shame on both of them.  I think the last time we had a balanced budget in the US was during the Clinton years.
In any case, let's stay on topic.  This thread is a discussion about if a recession is coming.

Looking back on this thread there are a number of smart people who predicted doom and gloom, which has yet to materialize.  Point is, no one knows.

Slow and steady wins the race in investing. I’ve stopped trying to predict anything. Dollar cost averaging is my strategy.

Beancounter reacted to SouthOfTheBorder in Is Florida real estate bubble about to burst?
any new construction “building up” meaning a high rise building, will start at $1.2million anywhere you’d want to live. They aren’t building high rise residential towers in subprime or less desirable areas.  The most recent new development starts at $1.6m for a low floor 2 bedroom apartment.  The property taxes on $1.6M are $30,000 annual + the HOA will run $20,000++ minimum. That’s $50k annually if you paid cash for the apartment, plus skyrocketing homeowners & auto insurance.
You can buy apartments in older buildings for much less near the beach - starting around $700,000 that would require renovation and the HOA would be much less.  But, many of those buildings haven’t been maintained properly or inspected for decades.  Just remember the collapse of the building in Surfside, FL a couple of years ago.  The residents knew of major problems yet nobody wanted to pay to fix it.  That’s a common thing there - so many older retired people in those buildings that won’t pay for anything.
For decades, the main attraction to Florida was beautiful weather in winter/spring & very inexpensive w no state income taxes.  Now the weather is unbearable for most of the year - unless you like heat, humidity & rain.  While no state income taxes, everything else is very expensive.
I don’t know what happens when properties become uninsurable because that means banks won’t lend money to buy.  Insurance is a huge & growing problem that has not been addressed. Many insurance companies have pulled out of Florida completely.
if you’re considering a move there - rent for at least 12 months and get a realistic view of quality of life, weather & cost of living.

If I were over age 60 (which I am), getting 5% risk free on $1 million or more is fine with me.  That is why I now have very little in equities, as my T-bills and CDs are giving me 5%.   A young person can take the risk with equities, assuming it can be held for 10+ years and the return will be closer to 8 or 10%.

Decided to just give an updated thread on him. Lots of posts in recommendation threads but his own thread I see was back in 2018 and I can't post in that. Anyways, I saw him on Monday and I see why he's one of the main handful of names that pop-up for NY providers. Good time and helped me forget the worst hiring session I had a few hours earlier with a different provider.
