Doesn't hurt to try to text the number in the away message/auto reply. In my experience, guys do tend to have their profile expire and then reactivate fairly frequently. But if it's been multiple months, he's not likely to still be checking RM and likely hasn't seen your messages there. You can confirm this by looking at the symbols next to your message to him, if it has two check marks next to it (screenshot attached) that means he's read the message. Otherwise he hasn't seen it.

For identity protection, like others have said, there's many apps to generate a separate phone number. Burner and Google Voice being popular options.
I think he might have just been trying to get cash out of you (or he possibly just didn't know better). I've found that if I go to my RM Messages page and see the list of providers I've chatted with, if you click on their thread with you it will tell you when they've last logged onto RM, even if their profile setting is set to private. Also, two little 'check marks' next to your message will reveal whether they've been read or not. (One check mark indicates 'sent' and two check marks indicate 'sent and received'.

I think it's less a question of destruction of property and more one of obstruction of justice. If you flush the cocaine down a toilet, it is an act of destruction of property. But the police aren't after the cocaine for its own sake, but rather for its evidentiary value. Therefore, its destruction interferes with an investigation and in so doing obstructs justice. If instead of destroying the encryption keys the phone owner had locked the intact phone in a safe to keep it from the police, it is still an act intended to deny the police access to evidence of a possible crime and in that thwarts their investigation and obstructs justice.
I think the agents were too heavy handed in their actions and the lack of due process (no court issued search warrant) horrendous. But I would be very reluctant to throw the baby out with the bathwater, meaning to dilute an important legal principle because of sloppy procedural issues.

They would then move more centrally, create their own profile with the confidence that comes from a bit of experience, and up their rates.
