+ jrhoutex got a reaction from TonyDown in 21st Annual Palm Springs Weekend
I stayed at the Descanso several years ago (2015/2016) when it was East Canyon Resort.  The small classic inn was built in 1946 so it will have fairly large rooms but small baths.  Some of the rooms are 400 - 500 sq ft.  I believe it was sold in 2020 to the owners of Santiago who did an extensive restoration.  As I recall, it was a nice place back when I stayed there.  My only negative is perhaps the location gets substantially more wind than the Inns in the Warm Sands area (southern part of town). A positive note, is the location is close to downtown Palm Springs.  The pool and hot tub areas are nice and well kept.

I just returned from NYC from last weekend's trip.  I didn't see anyone using Metrocards.  The OMNY readers are now functional.  I set up one of my credit cards as a "transit" card in my iPhone, then used my iPhone to tap the OMNY reader to pay for subway fare.
The Q70-SBS bus transfer from LGA to 74th ST/Roosevelt Station (subway connections) or WoosideAve/61st (for LIRR connection) is now free.  You pay once you enter the Roosevelt Station/Woodside Station.
Advanced planning my save transit costs.  If you qualify for a reduced-Fare, you can apply for a reduce-fare metro card, then use the number assigned to active an OMNY account so you can use your phone to tap the OMNY reader for the reduced-fare.  It took under 30 days to apply and get a reduced-fare metro card.  All of the buses and subways have OMNY readers now.

So I have been a member of this site for 3 months now.    I believe some thoughts,  ideas and feedback are in order.

When I first arrived here,  I wasn't sure what the site really was.   When I discovered the forums,  it really is much like the fitness site  "Realjock", where I have been a member for years.
I was intrigued and to be honest,  quite fascinated something like this even existed.    Very positive initial impression.    Now on my 3 month anniversary,  there are a few of my thoughts:

    1.  SITE AMONG THE BEST AND WELL RUN:    My initial impression was correct.   I like the site,  most of the discussions and dialogue.   I appreciate the moderators (and approach taken).  Never have seen moderators in action before.    Some of the extras,   the "points"  the categories are kind of interesting.     I'm still waiting for my Christmas gift for all the participation....jk.
    2.   MEMBERS LARGELY FRIENDLY,  OUTGOING AND ACCEPTING:    There are really good men here.   Sure,   I heard initially there would be a few exceptions  (and I've now seen that in action).   A number have reached out to me,  welcomed me and have been very supportive and friendly.    Those very few that are petty,  are largely ignored and ultimately blocked if warranted.     I'm someone who wants to learn from those you respect and appreciate.   That is by far the majority here.
    3.  DIVERSE FORUM DISCUSSION:   I'm an educated professional person.   I really like being able to discuss  "shop talk"  conversation,  but also engage those who talk about legal issues,  finance and a whole host of other things,  including various parks and museums.     There are things discussed that are new to me as well.    You never know what you'll find.
This was indeed the "gem"  here.    I never would have guessed.
4:  TO THOSE WHO RUN AND MODERATE THE SITE:   Just know the larger picture.   You have provided a place for men to come and share,  to feel involved and learn.   Those who have been members for years  clearly show they have a stake in the site,  the quality of association and participation.    Friendships,  mentoring,  so many things happen here every day.   Just know I'm pleased to be associated and I look forward to gaining more insight as time goes on.   I'm an optimist by nature and generally run my life in a positive way.   This site seems to follow the same basic principles.

Thank you for all your work,  time and effort.   You definitely get an "A".

Slept on his sofa a couple times (sheets, pillow, and blanket perfectly fitted) after incredible dinners he'd quickly whip up.  Loved to make all the food for the forum weekend, presiding  over the kitchen.  "Those people in Sacramento are assholes".  Daily long walks in his fantastic neighborhood and helped run his HOA like a well-oiled machine.  Long full career as a beloved teacher.  Xmas decorations meticulously placed in plenty of time, then carefully boxed up for next time. Southwestern and Mexican art expert. Knew all the best breakfast dives and agreed that "Mexican food" and "upscale" don't go together.  Argh!  Too much to say here!!  Very glad I knew him.

Always welcoming in the trips to Palm Springs.  Not always welcoming to ideas not consistent with his own which led to some interesting and well considered debates.  I recall at one of the pool parties he was in a debate with another guest, he was sitting on a couch next to an escort who he would either stop to enjoy orally when his opposing viewpoint guest was speaking or manually massaging the escort's member to emphasize his own point.  It seems to me the two things he enjoyed the most were a good debate and good sex, but I know he many other passions such as cooking and traveling and history and....well the list goes on.  I know he was a great friend to Oliver and to many others.

Just one year ago today, my dear friend and travel companion, Epigonos, left us on his 82nd birthday.  He was gruff and garrulous with strong opinions, always vocal about where he stood on an issue, but the sweetest man, in disguise.  He was generous, kind and sentimental, always protective of those he loved.
Was it just a year ago?

    I miss him.

The best form of LTC insurance is to take care of yourself and eat healthy when you're in your prime. A nursing home should be something you're actively trying to avoid in your old age.
It's possible that you may need a nurse to visit you at home a couple times a week or maybe even daily but that's something you can anticipate and invest for decades in advance.

September CPI was released this morning. So I geeked out, crunched the numbers, and made my guess about the I-bond rate that will be announced November 1. So here's my estimate:
The I bond rate will be 5.17%, but that includes my wild guess that the fixed component will rise from 0.9% to 1.2%. I'll circle back to this in 3 weeks and evaluate the accuracy of my prophecy. 😋

The weekend is picked by Oliver, who has hosted this event for many years. If you would like to host an event on a different weekend I suggest you arrange it and put the time and money into it that Oliver does. Oliver has invited us and you have a simple choice to make, accept or decline the invitation.
