@pubic_assistance it's not just drug addicts. It's also criminals, i.e. drug dealers. Also, the homeless, the mentally ill, and the mentally ill homeless.

Instead of “pervert,” how about selfish and inconsiderate?  If you want a T-room experience, go to a gay bar, better yet one with a back room, a gay bathhouse, a gay sex club, go virtual and cruise the apps … so many legal options where you won’t be scaring a poor man, or worse a poor child, who just needs to go to the bathroom.

I’m in Spain for 6 months and am really enjoying how much more considerate Spaniards are of others.  Nobody ever talks in a movie theater, not even a whisper.  Guys never pull out their cells in locker rooms to snap selfies.  Heck, they don’t even pull them out to talk, text, or surf.  And in all the many train and bus station bathrooms I’ve been in, guys just go to the bathroom, nothing more, nothing else.  We Americans have somehow lost respect for others as a societal value.

PS:  I didn’t belong to a gym in Buenos Aires but did go to the movies a ton during my 3-month stay.  Nope, not a whisper there either.

It is true that in a place like NYC there are lots of other options for cruising nowadays, like gay bars, but some of us grew up when the social options were very different, so we still remember when public toilets were the only place where we could handle our cocks in public, much less make sexual overtures to another male. Old habits die hard. Then there are also the closeted gays who don't want to be seen in openly gay surroundings, and want to be able to plausibly claim, "I just came here because I needed to use the bathroom."

I went to college in a small city in farm country. One evening in the college library, I went to use the men's room, and when I sat down in a stall, the foot in the next stall started a tapping routine that I immediately recognized from my experience in Manhattan public men's rooms. When I returned the message, we both left and met outside in the hall. The guy turned out to be a former student who now lived in town, and I went home with him. After we had concluded our business at his place, I asked him why he was cruising in the college library. He said that all the actively gay men in the town knew that the library men's room was the standard place in town to pick up tricks, and if the guy in the adjoining stall didn't respond to the tapping foot, he probably didn't know what it meant and wasn't available. It was easy enough to just leave and start looking for something on the library book shelves, as if that were the only reason he was there.

Unfortunately, one evening the tapping foot turned out to belong to one of my professors. When he emerged from the stall and I saw who it was, I was dumbfounded, because he was the last person I would have wanted to have sex with, but I couldn't very well refuse after having signaled with my foot that I was available. Luckily, the semester was almost over, and I took no more courses with him.

i somehow get the feeling that the people most upset by the bathrooms at New York's Penn Station do not, unlike me, use them on a daily basis.

Although they might not be gold-plated they are quite useful for a quick "pee and go" and I often treasure them!

A man I used to work with would visit a known-about men's room in a local mall. On one occasion, the foot tapper in the next stall was mall security, and my co-worker was trespassed from mall property. In spite of that, he went back some months later, was identified, then arrested. The arrest led to a security inquiry by our employer, and which included a check of the on-line history for his workstation computer. Believing he had already covered his tracks by daily deleting that history, he denied visiting restricted sites. He didn't realize corporate computer services had its own records of hundreds of visits and immediately knew he was lying. As he had been a good performer for almost twenty years, he was allowed to resign instead of being fired, which at least let him keep his accumulated pension entitlement.

Closeted gays have another option:  dealing with your sh!t instead of sh!tting on other people.  If you’re just there to pee, having to deal with men having sex is creepy and gross.  For underage boys, it’s exponentially creepier and grosser.  Now that this crackdown puts the fear of God, or Rikers, in PennStation regulars, I bet plenty of them “magically” work out their issues and figure out a legal, non-creepy/gross way of satisfying their sexual urges.  Funny how that works.

Some things are possible, and that possibility is perhaps imminent, so there is reason to be concerned about them, even if they represent the furthest right that a pendulum might swing, others are an absolute certainty but most likely further in the future than our species is likely to survive, and those give no cause for any concern.
