Today I went to a barber shop in Spanish Harlem. It was my second time there. The last time I was there 5 weeks ago the barbers were all wearing masks & kept the customers masks on when they were cutting hair. It is a small shop...only about 4 chairs. Three barbers were working all in their 50s. . I sat in the middle chair. Every barber had their mask on their chin. Not only that...the barber in the first chair was talking loudly the whole time to the barber in the 3rd chair who was just sitting there with no customers. My barber frequently chimed in. He left my mask off for the entire haircut. I was tempted to say something about their lack of COVID precautions, but didn’t. Should I have said something? I didn’t want to come across as some gringo who was looking to start trouble.

I wouldn't create any conflict with someone holding scissors or razors close to my face and neck.

I believe someone posted on another thread a video of 50 yr old lady being beaten to the ground,

by 2 youngsters when she designated herself the gatekeeper and owner to the rights of who could ride the elevator with her.

In these situations, especially dealing with people of lower socio-economic extraction it's better to remove yourself.

Obviously we don’t know how the barbers would have reacted since the original poster didn’t speak up. But for the record, unfavorable responses to requests for Covid precautions span across class statuses.

I was there earlier this week, but my barber wasn’t there. They kept telling me he would be back any minute. After about 20 minutes, I left. When I went back today they seemed so surprised & happy to see me, that I sat right down & he started cutting my hair. I then realized that masks were not part of the plan. I do not want to report them as barbershops were closed for 3 months in NYC last spring & I know they can’t afford to be fined. What really pissed me off more than anything was that they were loudly talking back & forth. I assume they are not as informed as I am on the virus & really did not realize they were putting me & themselves at risk. If I was fluent in Spanish, I probably would have said something.

Not being judgmental, just pointing out a fact that anyone could use to infer a possible reaction/outcome.

Not reporting them is allowing other people to be put at risk of COVID and not just other customers. Family members of the workers would also be at risk. You need to report them. It's possible if it's their first time being reported, they may only get a warning. If they have been reported before, it shows they didn't learn and deserve to be fined or closed.

Until people are widely vaccinated, the only way we get through this is if everyone does the right things. Don't be an enabler and let people get away with putting our fellow humans at risk.

The OP wasn't engaged in a dubious transaction in a park at 2 a.m. in Spanish Harlem. He was at a barbershop where barbers in their 50s were working (not MS-13-tatted 18-year-olds wearing blue bandanas). OP felt safe and comfortable enough at that barbershop to become a repeat customer. So I don't think pointing out "Spanish Harlem" in red is helpful or warranted at all.

The guy who cuts my hair is doing one appointment at a time, takes my temperature (and records it) when I get there, and we're masked the whole time. He'll ask me to move the ear strap off and hold my mask in place while he trims around my ear.

Mine does the same. They are using disposable barber capes and all his equipment is sterilized between uses. The waiting area is closed, there are only two barbers and their seating is at least 10 feet apart. They've done a good job, but it is costing them like crazy - I doubt they are able to make rent on their midtown Manhattan location.

My barbershop has clear floor-to-ceiling partitions between the chairs, they wear mask AND face shield, and you keep your mask on during the cut and they move the ear straps themselves. They have partitions between the seats in the small seating area as well but it hasn't been getting crowded anyway.

I am not sure how many Latino barbers you have seen but in my experience if they aren't talking loud then they are blasting music. I would suggest either find a new shop in Spanish Harlem, there is practically 1 every 20ft, or finding a nice white barber shop before the Karen/Snitch energy gets released. People really need to stop minding other people's business and just worry about their own.

Ditto for my barber.

Same with one of my favourite masseurs here in Toronto but I will rather wait until the government lifts our Lockdown.

I'm just too scared of Corona getting crazy again, and I really want his extras ?
