Agreed, poppers aren’t considered PNP, they’re pretty much in a category by themselves and more commonly used than you might think. Just ask the guy if he’s ok with you using them.

I was never in this exact position, but I dated a very wealthy man when I was 20-21 (he was around 30 and had family money as well as a successful business). While he never paid for me to live, he did take me to luxurious places and spend money on me. Having grown up poor with a single Mom, I was always anxious. And while he never said I was replaceable, he hinted that my looking as I did then was non-negotiable. I was savvy enough to realize this relationship had no good future. How can I have a long-term relationship with someone who won't let me age? 
I also had offers to escort (I had friends doing sex work in college) but I was too afraid of HIV to go through with it. I would probably do it if I were in my 20s today. 

I think there are a lot of young guys who are in your Kiwi's pre-employment situation.  NYC is expensive and a lot of young people (even many with full-time employment) either can't or can barely make ends meet.  I'm sure a lot of them wouldn't mind a little side gig with an older guy.  I think that's true with both gays and straights. 
Young people today have a very different view of homosexuality than they did when we were growing up.  They all have and hang out with gay friends, and (so I'm told) many so-called straights have had experiences with and sometimes sexual relationships with those friends.   So they're not afraid of or offended by gay sex, and with enough interest (and monetary incentive) some would be willing to consider providing that service regularly to one or two carefully chosen clients.  I hesitate to use the term 'escorting' for this because it's not what we think of as offering a wide range of services to the public to earn a living, which I think describes most of the guys on RM.
The problem is how (if you're one of these young people) to find a potential client.  Going on RM or Seeking is WAY too public and is expensive and inefficient for finding one regular client.  The apps police against it (and there's lots of noise and scammers on them) and sitting in a bar/public place and trolling for clients is dangerous from a safety and legal perspective.  It might happen randomly (e.g., a diner soliciting a waiter as we were leaving the restaurant - I've seen friends be successful in this), but that's a very inefficient way to find a client.  So, even those guys who are interested are frustrated in finding a client in a discreet manner.  
Oh, for the days of Craigslist, when it was easy to find these guys without too much noise or too many scammers.  

I met this nice Kiwi guy, 19. He just moved to NYC and was short on cash.

Well I know I never  considered the idea of being an escort.   It never occurred to me until 3 friends suggested it and gave their reasons why I should give it thought.    I think it was a year after that I was ready to go and give it a shot.   It was a good start and I had support right from the beginning.

I appreciate all the thoughts and insights on this. I've also wondered at times: If I had been more attractive in my youth, is this something I would have done? I just wasn't good-looking or buff enough to even make it a viable option. But would have overcome the other barriers? I have no idea! 

Maybe it's a good thing that only a relative few guys were cut out for this. I might be broke otherwise.

I have a hot, gay acquaintance who recently became a masseur and often posts thirst traps online. He also sometimes posts about his financial instability. I often wonder how escorts manage to top clients whom they don’t find attractive.  I can understand bottoming for them, but how do they get an erection and perform as a top for a guy they don’t like?

I understand the fantasy of wanting to have some sort of sex with hot men one sees in public.  I went to Oakland's Pride Festival yesterday and there was a very hot man near the Latin stage that I could barely take my eyes off.  Where this thread veers into silly territory for me is actually thinking that a significant portion of hot men would choose to do sex work.  It doesn't matter the circumstance -- a lot of men (gay, straight or bi) simply aren't motivated to do sex work, even if it just involves being "serviced."

Lots of guys like the idea in abstract ‘wouldn’t it be great if I got paid to have sex!’ but then once faced with the reality of it they back off. They realise they’ll need to be available when clients want, they’ll have to fuck guys they don’t find attractive, and they’ll need to face prejudice from family and friends who don’t approve of their choice of work. 
I think it’s not a job most people can do. Aside from needing some physical attributes (because you’re selling your body) you definitely need the mental strength to be able to do it. It’s definitely not easy. But I will say it can be great fun, empowering and give you a lot of freedom and opportunities. Also a great insight into human sexuality.

Along the same line, I always wonder if men are aware that they can basically receive head at any given moment at any time.  There will always be someone somewhere who would get down on their knees for him with no questions asked.  I was in a public place, looked around, and said that very thing to myself.
