The Oriental in Bangkok

 

Had a big party in Bangkok and The Oriental was the base hotel. We had guests who missed some of the festivities because the hotel did not give us their messages. Shoddy service!!!

Glad someone else here also stayed at the Sukhothai! It was just amazing. I had always wanted to stay at the Oriental in Bangkok, but haven’t gotten the chance yet. I know it has often been named the world’s number one hotel for the last god knows how many years, all due to their legendary service.

I stayed at the Westin in Detroit airport one night as well. It was indeed very nice, quiet, and cool, as it’s literally at the airport where in many places (like a bathroom!) you are right next to a parked airplane.

Peninsula hotel, Kowloon, Hong Kong was the best I've stayed in. Love the tower suites at aria Las Vegas also

 

Love the HK Peninsula. Great workout facilities and pool. Love the men’s room at Felix where you feel you are peeing on the city:). Old enough to remember the hotel before they built the tower!

I lived in Hong Kong for couple years but never visited the Peninsula. Heard all those great things about it, like their fleet of Rolls Royces. Haven’t they gotten a bit too touristy though? I mean, the hotel itself becoming a tourist attraction...

The Upper House Hong Kong. Beyond luxe. I had a view of Hong Kong harbor from my bed, the shower, the bathtub, the dressing room. And the regular non suite room was probably about 1000sf. In HK. In Wan Chai!

 

Sukhothai Bangkok is very nice as well and I quite liked the room and service at the Peninsula Tokyo, but not much of a view from its location in Maru-no-uchi/Hibiya

It's been 10 years since I stayed at the Sukhothai Bangkok and it was fantastic. Glad to hear it is still good.

The Upper House was right next to my office in Pacific Place when I was working in HK. We used to go there for after-work drink. The view was indeed very nice, but I never got a chance to get inside the guest rooms to check them out.

 

Talking about city skylights, Manhattan has nothing on Hong Kong.

Literally a couple dozen favorites around the world.....a few biz days in Germany next week, will be followed by a few relaxing days at one of them - Brenners Park Hotel / Baden Baden.....(hopefully winnings at the fab casino in town might pay for this vaca….if not, oh well).

I would add that despite the nice sounding riverside location of the Oriental, the Sukhothai setting is actually quite better.

The Mandarin Oriental in San Francisco, which is apparently now a Loews Regency had amazing views. Three years in a row I went out for "lost weekends" and stayed in a Bridge-to-Bridge view room. The hotel occupies the top eleven floors of 345 California Center in the Financial District, a building that was the third highest office building in the city. Bay views are only slightly obstructed by the Transamerica Pyramid building.

One of the most comfortable hotels that I ever stayed at was the Doubletree in Pasadena. I stayed there for over a week several years ago and it was one of the nicest hotel stays ever. I think it is now a Westin.

A few years ago The Connaught in London would have been on the short list but alas it has been thoroughly tarted up by its new owners.

The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, India. The first thing you see after the sincere greeting is a sign that asks you not to tip but, rather, leave an envelope with the concierge - if you want- when you leave. The entire staff was genuinely friendly but unobtrusive. It is the only hotel I have ever stayed at where I felt their "good morning" was real. Beautiful views of the Lake Hotel and private swimming pools for each villa. Worth the trip to Udaipur just to stay at the Villas.

My criteria for a "nice" hotel is: 1) it's safe; 2) it's clean (no bugs); 3) good location; 4) value - not too expensive; 5) staff is friendly; 6) parking is free (if I am driving there); 7) free and good Wi-Fi; 8) my escort can get in-and-out without hassle; 9) tv and AC work; 10) good value - not too expensive (yeah, I know, I already said that). I don't give two hoots if the hotel is 5* or 2.5* - if it saves me money and suits my purposes, I'm staying there.
