I know many of us have pet names for our cocks, our lovers, our cars, but I was curious about Pet Names for our Pets.

I have four dogs: Bonehead, Ben; Bear; Brandy and have had other dogs Kismet, Taylor, Holly, Bailey, Fred, Rusty, Sassy and Baxter. I suspect that there are others on this forum that have had a Ben, Bailey, Fred, Baxter and possibly a Sassy or a Holly. But Bonehead seems to be a unique name. Any other uniquely named pets among our brethren?

continuing the apparent "B" tradition, our family dog when I was age 3-12 was a female named Bunker.....a golden German Shepherd who shed like the dickens.....totally kick-back dog who, apparently, let my younger bro and I crawl all over her as babies/toddlers/preschoolers with nary a complaint.......I think it's a very cool name for a dog.....

she died a bit early at age 10 or so.....we'd moved to a desert climate in the middle of summer, she walked into a spiny cactus one day and we don't know if we ever got all the spines out, and she just died one morning that first summer in the backyard.....

I had a cat named Heidi. She was originally Cleopatra, but Heidi seemed more fitting with her favorite hobby.

Currently, I have a cat named Lucien. Originally, his name was Lucy, but upon discovering he is male the slight name change seemed appropriate.

Lastly, I had a cat named Echo. He was named this because as a kitten he looked just like my other cat.

Three Scottish Terriers - each one named Abigail!

First lived 6 years and dropped dead - came back to me (will spare you the Metphysical details) so was naturally Abigail. She lived to be 16 and died naturally at home -- Tried my best to find another name in the 10 months before the third Abigail! Tried these names out - used them w/ imaginary Scottie and nothing worked! So Abigail it is! She is 7 now.

Prior to that in life various Dogs: Portia, Heidi, Duchess, Gretchen, Theophilus, Anna

My first two rescues, I just kept the names they had at surrender. But my current rescue was named Chico, on the shelter I.D., and thought that was way too common a pet name where I live. Maybe I should have kept it. He doesn't pay attention to me anyway, whatever I call him!! ;)

My male cats name was Clinton --- after Bill.

Was he known for his tomcatting? :)

Similarly inspired, I had a cocker spaniel named Cory, for Corazon Aquino, and a black poodle named Teddy for ... well, you know ...

... which leads right back to tomcatting.

A good friend of mine had a lovable male dog named Gertrude. Many of my animals had somewhat common names, but I did have a pair of dogs named Gudrun and Sigrid, and a Greyhound named Guinevere (she already had that when I got her). A few dogs were named after authors or characters in novels. And I had a Persian cat named Cyrus ["the Great"].

Lots of pets (mostly cats) and many names, but the only ones I came up with were Penny (beagle puppy) and Pretzel (brown tabby cat with white). The rest either already had names or were named by others.

One was named after soccer player Mia Hamm but my daughter pronounced Mia like Maya, so that's how her name is spelled. Cute, sweet cat, unless you rile her up. Then watch out!

I had a German Shepherd named Rags-shortened from an exceedingly long pedigree name, a horse named Sword Dancer but called Fred & always thought if I had a cat I'd call him P G Woodhouse & went to a rescue centre & found one called Jeeves-had to take him home!

A company I used to work at maintained an informal discussion forum for employees. There were many postings there about people looking for a new home for their pet; the most common reasons were moving into a place that didn't allow them, or the pet wasn't compatible with a new baby. There was an inevitable backlash from people criticizing them for abandoning the pet. This was before I'd adopted my rescue; these days I think I'd be on their side. I can't think of anything that'd make me give my girl away.
