March 20 (Reuters) - United Airlines (UAL) CEO Scott ‌Kirby said on ‌Friday the airline will cancel about 5% of this year's planned flights in the short ‌term, as jet fuel prices surge due to the Middle East conflict.

"If prices stayed at this level, it would mean ‌an extra $11 billion in annual expense just for jet fuel," Kirby said in a ‌message to employees posted on its website.

Please Belgium is so small you can walk everywhere... 😂 get a bike, the Dutch use them all the time!

I also love your public transportation system.

Just like New Jersey, which is 2/3 the size of Belgium, everyone uses bicycles and public transport there as well. That stretch of country between Newark and the Hudson River is ideal for cycling.

Petrol is now over $4.00 per gallon at Costco in Las Vegas.  It's high compared to most of the nation because all of our gasoline comes from California.  So, we pay the high cost from California refineries plus the cost to pump it uphill hundreds of miles, just without a few extra bucks per gallon of California fuel taxes.

Pleasure boaters are in for a shock this summer too.
If it costs $5/gal for a car, it will be $7/gal at the local marina. Lots of boats will be sitting idle at the docks with 'for sale' signs on them.

Because I don't want to go too much off topic here, I answered in this topic:

According to today's LA Times, the average price for a gallon of gas in CA is $5.66, but there are places in the state that advertise as much as $9.69/gallon.😮

@Charlie isn’t it interesting our CA state government here stays silent on how tax coffers are getting surplus benefit from all the state taxes on gas when these prices surge! It’s huge…

In fairness to CA, the price rise is pretty recent.

I hadn't bought petrol for a while as I haven't travelled away from Canberra much, and I don't go past servos often to note the day-to-day prices. Today was refuel day and regular UPL was $2.50/litre, and the 95 octane for my car was $2.659. Last time I bought it was under $2. As prices have gone up over the past few months, the Aussie dollar has also appreciated against the USD, and the two price movements both increase the USD equivalent of our prices. The $2.659/litre today works out at $US7 per US gallon. (Diesel was just over $3/litre today.)

According to my calculations thats "only" US$ 6.59 for one US gallon.

Whatever the precise calculation, it's still a lot, but I drive so little it won't break the bank. I also usually have a supermarket voucher that takes 4 cents/litre off (big deal I know!) so that softens the blow.

My calculation was for the 95 octane, $2.659 (not standard unleaded at $2.50). The spot exchange rate when I worked it out was about $AU1=$US0.6966 (it's dropped since then), so that was $US1.8523, multiplied by 3.78L for a price per gallon is $US7.0015.

In less than a month, gas prices have jumped 30-40% in the Philippines, which is bad enough.  Even more worrisome is that the government says the country has only 45 days of supply left (the Philippines doesn’t have a strategic petroleum reserve like the US).  Yikes, unless something changes, and fast, a gigaton of sh!t is about to hit the fan.

Jet fuel prices in the U.S. have more than doubled in a matter of weeks as Middle East tensions squeeze supply, fueling concerns airlines could run short of fuel.

Prices jumped from about $2.17 to $4.57 per gallon by March 27, according to the Argus U.S. Jet Fuel Index. Airlines warn inventories could run dry within weeks, raising the risk of higher airfares and flight cancellations.

This is having me thinking about booking my September trip now. The miles prices haven't been increased yet from where they were in December when I last checked.
