Actress Marlo Thomas, 87, made her first public appearance on Monday night - eight months after the death of her beloved husband and talk show host Phil Donahue, 88. The actress stepped out in New York City for Night at the Pier, Family Equality’s signature fundraising gala. Also in attendance was Debbie Harry and Demi Moore.

Since his passing last August, Thomas has been reclusive and out of the public eye. She had stopped doing promotions for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the renowned pediatric treatment center founded by her late father, Danny Thomas.

God, another thread I couldn't care less about. What is happening to this site?

I don't get it.  The thread's title makes it clear what it's about.  It isn't click-bait.  Is it really so bothersome that someone started a thread that didn't interest you, or even that (perhaps) the majority of threads that get started don't interest you?  Isn't it easy just to ignore them by scrolling past them?  (I will say there's one poster here whose threads get on my nerves, but that's mostly because the thread titles frequently don't make it clear what the threads are about.)

I too have minimal interest in these aging celebrities from a bygone era except to react when I see such headlines “ Gawd, are they still alive?”

The IQ of the site used to be higher, but it's supporting pointless threads like this that shows why it is no longer.

If you come here for pithy, Parkeresque commentary, you may be barking up the wrong tree.

This site is what it is.

Perhaps datalounge would be a better outlet.

And here I thought I at least was up to the standard of Dorothy and the Roundtable set at the Algonquin. 😊

A distant relative whom I have never met made a really odd post relating to Danny Thomas and daughter Marlo in a genealogy database.  The post was about an ancestor we had in common, a great uncle and his wife, who lived in a small rural town in western New York.  Supposedly, they had somehow formed a friendship with Danny Thomas and Marlo.  He didn't say how the friendship came about, but it was apparently close enough so that Danny and Marlo traveled from NYC to pay occasional visits to the uncle and aunt.  I don't know anything about the guy except that he lives in a region of the state where my mother's family came from.  No idea whether the story is true or not, but when I read it, I just thought, "what the fuck?"

I agree with that. I was wrong to suggest that IQ had anything to do with the topics. Trivia is no doubt popular, but it doesn't much interest me. I have been coming to this site for some 25 years and I think it has changed. Substantive discussions seem fewer, but I still come looking for them.

What you're seeing is the overall change of the human attention span

When HB ran the show, people still wanted to have engaged, deep discussions about varying things.  You'd see multiple paragraphs of writing.

When Daddy took over, it was getting downsized and quippier, but you still had multiple posters who were reliably verbose.

Now, it's TLDR.  We want bite-sized pieces of info that we can digest and provide an equally bite-sized reply.  It is what it is.

Rather than look for them, start one. Post something in the lounge and we can have a substantive discussion.
