May I ask where you are getting your information? Unless this has personally happened to you or a loved one then this is absolutely fear mongering. I have been to PV twice in the last year and have a friend who lives near Zona Romantica. I walked alone day and night and had zero issue and always felt safe. I have encountered police and have had no confrontation or hostility. I agree with the other person who stated that they felt safer walking alone in PV than they do in certain American cities. As others have said here, I am not saying things like this never happen (just as shootings, theft, crime and corruption also happen in American cities) but insinuating that it is the norm is completely inaccurate.

Yes personal experience.  Pre-COVID, we were walking from one bar to another  when we were  “Arrested” by local police, who threatened jail and taking passports away unless we did business with them.  By business they meant a bribe.   Once I was able to figure that out, I was able to negotiate.   But I sort of speak Spanish, better when immersed into it, and I was able to get us out of it for a few hundred US bucks.

should we have said no to doing business?  Maybe, but when you have had a bit to drink and you are gay last thing you want to do is roll the dice in ANY foreign country   At least I don’t

we had been warned a couole times from locals not to walk from bar to bar at night for this very reason and we ignored it.  I think when the locals are warning its not fear mongering.  I felt perfectly safe during the day or at night in ride shares

I agree there are places in the US far scarier and far more corrupt.  But as a white male I have fairly decent chances of coming out unscathed dealing with police.  (I provide my skin color because it directly impacts how I am treated in the US and that privledge cannot be ignored during a discussion on this topic)

in the us I do what I can to avoid places that may put me in danger.  The difference is I am able to guage this in the US much better, I speak the language fluently/without having to concentrate and I have resources to tap into etc.

going back to what I had originally posted, for some, they may feel safer staying in a resort.   by the way, When I go to PV we actually rent a house and don’t stay at a resort.  But I am now extremely careful at night not to put myself in that position. Sometimes only going to one place each evening.   To each his own.   If you feel safe walking at night, good for you   It just won’t be everybody’s experience

sometimes it’s a safety issue though.  it’s dangerous to be in PV at night not at a resort.  you need to take cars hailed by employees or you may get “arrested” and forced to cough up money.

This is not the case.  PV is no more or less 'dangerous' than Manhattan or Chicago.

Use common sense, but don't be a stereotypical American tourist.  If you're visiting MX, get out of the resort and actually see, talk with and mingle amongst local Mexicans.

You might learn something.  Perhaps even change your own perceptions.

I totally understand: You had a bad experience and it's colored the way you feel.

You just got picked in the shit lottery...  It happens and I'm sorry it did to you.

Something made you look or sound like a target.  Pinpoint, if you can, what that was and attempt to remedy it.  Mexico is a fantastic place, but asserting your understanding of the language and culture is necessary (imo) to being comfortable.

I still say get out there and keep exploring.

If you read my post I specifically state I don’t stay at a resort.  It has not soured my opinion about PV.   And I rent a house with friends when I go.  I have actually never stayed in a resort in PV but I know a lot of people that do out of concern for safety

Well, the obvious difference is that in Manhattan & Chicago, while hardly crime-free utopias, tourists don't have to worry about corrupt cops "arresting" them and shaking them down for money, as was @jeepo1's experience.

Correct.  NYC cops mostly just want hand jobs.

Have you ever lived in Chicago during the '80s?  ;)

rent.men There always seems to be a decent selection, especially during season or when Lucas is filming.

I was the victim of a shakedown by Mexican police.  It ain't fun.  They were thugs.  I guess I got off easy because it only cost $50/1000 pesos.  It didn't turn me off of Mexico ( I live there now) but it did turn me off driving in Mexico and in Ciudad Juarez in particular.

Kevin,  One of my all-time fantasies is giving a cop a hand job or BJ.  Can you or anyone else elaborate on a personal experience, the details would be fantastic.  PM if you prefer.  Thanks guys.
