It May Not Bother The Escort...

Miss Manners has frequently bemoaned the fact that she is perceived as an etiquette police officer, ready to jump on anyone who picks up the wrong fork. She's not - she offers advice to people who ask for it, and keeps quiet (but still probably notices :) ) in cases where she's not asked. I try to emulate this; I notice grammar and spelling but it's very very rare that I'll point it out unless it's directly affecting me (someone commenting that a problem is now fixed when they mean it is not fixed comes up more often that I ever would have believed). Comparing this to your parents correcting you is silly; your parents are in the position of raising and teaching you. I might be in that position with someone working for me; I can't imagine being in that position with an escort whose ad I'm viewing.

If it were me, and someone pointed out that kind of mistake, I hope I'd use it to correct my ad to put me a step above my competitors.

Since when did we choose a particular escort over another because of grammar? Screw grammar if I was hiring for an hour.

I’m a recovering pedant. I could have been gentler towards you, and I hope you didn’t feel too attacked in this thread.

I’ve sent messages to people advertising about some minor ad text issues, including a forum member I met in PS at the gathering. People have only responded very kindly or ignored me completely. I think a very gentle approach is required when you step into this realm.

I'm not saying that grammar can never change. I understand how someone might not understand the difference between "who" and "whom". And I'm one of the ones that can't usually differentiate between "which" and "that". But do we let all standards fall? Who/whom and that/which are somewhat subtle grammar points where the meaning is really obvious no matter which word they use. While the meaning is obvious when confusing dominant/dominate, are we really ok with confusing verbs and adjectives? If I was the parent of a child who used the phrase "I am the dominate boy on our block," aside from wanting to know who and how he is dominating, shouldn't I help him also understand why using the word dominate like this is wrong? I'd say yes. In the same way I wouldn't let him believe that 2 + 2 = 3.

@YoungAD, long time ( at least on the threads I've been following lately) no hear from. How the heck are you and your family? I hope it won't be considered presumptuous of me to wish you and them a spectacular autumn.

Thinking the best of you, I remain cordially yours,

Going online to find a poorly-written ad and then lording your oneupsmanship like some sort of trophy is not your finest hour.

And conversely, some of Marylander’s posts of late have encouraged me to write the following: I owe you an apology. And I am glad that we seem to stand on common ground on a number of topics that are far more important at the end of the day than most.

For what it's worth, there's a company that designs & sells amazing cutaway posters of science fiction ships. They're based in Michigan and I wangled an invitation to visit the studio. They were very friendly & showed me the about-to-be-released Star Trek Enterprise-E poster. I pointed out that they'd misspelled "deuterium", and the guy there said "We're just going by what Paramount sends us". Not taking the hint, I pointed out they'd spelled it correctly on another section of the poster, and things got kind of chillier from that point.

I have two of their posters but not the Enterprise-E, I'm not sure if they corrected it.

Tsk, tsk. Don't you know it should be "Screw grammar if I were hiring for an hour."? (You will never impress an escort if you don't recognize the need for the subjunctive form of the verb.)

If I made a major faux pas in a post here, and I'm sure I have, and if someone nicely corrected me, I hope I'd be appreciative. Or same thing if I were advertising.

I think I was respectful in my discussion of the bad grammar with him. I didn't use any pejorative language. I'm sure he's most likely seen dominate being used the same way he uses it in other ads. If it were me, and someone pointed out that kind of mistake, I hope I'd use it to correct my ad to put me a step above my competitors.

If the escort in question decides to give you advice on how to be a better doctor, please share. I am sure your graciousness will be beyond compare.

That obviously begs the question, are you a pompous ass for correcting his grammar or are you a good Samaritan? I believe pompous ass is ahead. In fact you might say that is it dominant.

If I had a public website and had made a glaring error, I'd prefer someone told me. But maybe I'm different that way.

Indeed, you are. And the escort in question told you as much. That, sir is the definition of faux pas. You do not get to choose if you made one, the other party does.

The problem, Gman, is that what appears to be a "glaring" error to you is minor and unimportant to many people, if the evidence of most escort ads is considered. I wonder if there is even some auto-correct glitch in the sites' programs that turns "dominant" into "dominate." And it is human nature to resent having one's errors pointed out by a stranger, or even by a friend. Let it go. Those of us who have been here a long time understand your quirks.

...But it sets my teeth on edge every time I read it.

A short email correspondence with an escort -

Mr. XXX--your pictures are incredible. One thing when I look at your ad. You can 'dominate' someone because it's a verb as in "Mr XXX dominates everyone he tops." But to describe yourself-you are 'dominant'. "Mr. XXX is an incredibly dominant top. "It's an adjective. You can't be dominate. Well you could be but not according to the rules of English. A lot of ***s do say it. But it is wrong.

Mr. XXX's response:

Thanks,

But I don’t think that matters, who cares.., I been noticed that..

contact me only to set an appointment not for grammar corrections..

Thanks for your concern

I wonder what he could do to your semi-colon?

I think I'd prefer to have someone mix up 'dominate' and 'dominant' to someone saying 'Exeunt the conversation'. o_O

You're in luck then. I (almost) never speak that phrase. I only write it. :D

I'm a top. That tallywacker of his is getting nowhere near my colon, semi or otherwise. ;)
