My first question is always about rates. Because we can't see them.

So if the auto reply  indicates the provider wants me to propose a possible time and date and place before I even can even ask about his rates and what I might can expect, I simply don't follow up on text or on RM. 

It sucks we need to ask rates, but we do. If auto reply includes his rates or otherwise indicates it's OK to make an inquiry about that, then I'll contact by text.
 

Set expectations accordingly, what does that mean? Also $100-$200 for a deposit is not necessarily the norm. I vary my deposits up but $50-$100 is where I’m at now.

I think in general: it’s the seeking of M4M sex period that makes it more flaky. And bi/straight guys looking for M4M sex are just as flaky if not more, than gay guys for obvious reasons.
 
Fact of the matter is: men in generally are flaky, I read a female escort forum and the guys they talk about are the same. Some of it is just biological: men have an urge to cruise more, but can’t always put honesty+horny+money = SCORE for escorts, together. And trying to get all 3 of those things from a man looking for a man?? Lord you have to be clever. That said: there’s 2 things I’ll say, but I’ve been fighting this topic enough but, it never gets old for me. #1: my experience in Ohio goes way back. They are one of the more flakiest states to do escort work. Idk why but, I used to go there without deposits and got SCAMMED out of appointments. However in the past couple years, I’ve made sure not to meet anyone without deposits there. Even if it only got me one or 2 clients at most. I rather that, than 1 flake to ruin my day or worse, miss out on potential client elsewhere.
 
In fact: I-70 from Denver to Pittsburg I consider “Flake Central”. Didn’t used to always be that way in Denver but, every other city including Kansas City, St. Louis, Indy, Columbus: You will get burned more times than you can imagine, if you don’t ask for deposits or at least ensure the client is a regular who is reliable.
I don’t know why it’s like that, but considering it runs thru the middle of the country: it’s not the most “progressive minded” I suppose. And don’t anyone on the forum get offended if you live in those areas. I’m not saying anyone in particular, I’m just talking a GENERAL population that exists on the escort sites. It’s not a personal assault however, after living in both Kansas City and St. Louis and seeing the games dudes play even when they aren’t paying: I’d say it is a correlation.
If you are going to do deposits, make sure to bring it up first thing so you don’t waste your time. You may also wish to only do it for certain situations: like if you have to host in a hotel or travel some distance. However, in my experience of going back and forth and only doing it in certain situations: I’m 100% deposit now because you really have no way of truly knowing if they are going to show.
It hasn’t messed up business any more than not taking them have. When I didn’t use to do it, I used to spend so much time waiting around for people.

I don’t require a deposit because we have an understanding of when we’re going to meet. But a lot of New Clients lately I haven’t asked for a deposit upon meeting and  a lot of clients that I don’t ask for a deposit, they end up flaking on me. Interesting on one part of this.  Unless the provider insists on booking, I always arrange and pay for the hotel, so I am putting a deposit down.  I haven't been flaked on by anyone to this point, but I also veer toward providers that are local and have been around awhile and reviewed.

Yeah, I just think some (gay) people have short attention spans. It just amazes me how detailed I have to explain stuff to people everyday. Like earlier, someone thought I was “already in town” even though the city he asked about was in my nearby travel cities.
I’m like dude, no. I’m not about to travel hours away for $200. And no…I’m not just arriving magically into a city and hanging out waiting for guys to call. That requires gas, hotel, food, and then somehow have to stay entertained in between clients. It’s not something that’s done by default with no clients Pre-booked. I’ve been the fool and did it many times, sometimes I still do because I want to go to a city for reasons other than clients: but then I’m waiting days to get the first real booking. I can’t explain it any more than I have already tried to explain it a million times. Rentmen and RentMasseur doesn’t even give us enough space to talk about these things in the profile. 
 
I’m trying to move towards a different model of business where I’m available by appointment only, and willing to travel. But if people can only think in the “now” and assume before actually getting the facts, it can get confusing. 
I realize part of the issue lies with the websites. It’s not always the clients or the escorts fault. It’s the communication platform has somehow not been sufficient in conveying to clients how providers work individually. 

And I’ll say one more thing:
lot of these “non deposit” guys, they often are more afraid of what they want, it’s less to do with a deposit. It’s their insecurity and ignorance towards sex workers. As if we can’t be responsible enough to be trusted with payment ahead. That’s why stuff like “fuck first, pay after” is used so commonly around here. But what they don’t tell you is, the times people have done just that, and either didn’t receive payment or only gotten partial payment.

Fact is, I did not assume everyone has to “align” to my preferences anymore than you stated: “Personally, I choose not to pay deposits or prepay for services. I've had experiences in the past that taught me this lesson.” 
 
That right there gives the impression that you had bad experiences paying deposits (likely because you didn’t do you due research) and are trying to allude to others not to do so.

I refuse to pay a deposit. What should I do?
Only contact providers that don’t require them; then show up for the appointment 100% of the time. If all clients did this, providers would not have to ask for deposits.

I have my own approach to conducting business, and whether you agree or disagree with it is entirely acceptable and it's natural for opinions to differ.
It's unrealistic to anticipate all potential clients to adhere to your regulations, or for the entire industry to adjust to your preferences. When inevitable discrepancies arise from this misalignment, it can understandably lead to frustration and anger.

It’s not right or wrong. It’s their discretion, just like with any service. 
1.) many attorneys require retainers
2.) home contractors for renovations may negotiate a deposit 
3.) Many physicians want your co-pay up front. 
The provider of any service has the right to determine their payment standards. You as the customer have the right to either accept those terms, or decline service and find services from a provider who has payment standards that are in accordance with your standards of business.
