That Ramada is awful, but affordable. I once stayed there and hired a provider from RM. He just had to walk from his room to mine.

You say San Francisco is perfectly safe (or as safe as any big city can be) because you've been there a few times recently whereas what I read & see on the Internet is wrong because I haven't been visited (well, not since 2010).  Sure you wanna go with that?
That was your experience.  Hey, good for you.  I lived in NYC from 1984-87 and routinely walked home or took the subway at 4-5am (because I was too poor to afford cabfare, LOL).  I never came close to getting mugged or assaulted.  I can't say I felt perfectly safe on the subway during those hours, but I never felt threatened either.  Does that mean NYC back then was a safe city? Oh, heck no!  The crime statistics prove that NYC was a rather unsafe city in the mid-80s.  I was just lucky.
I recently saw an interview with a 20-year SF resident who moved for a number reasons, crime being a big one.  Even though she lived in a good neighborhood (she was a top exec at a Fortune 100 company), her car was broken into 5 times in 5 months.  She saw open drug use and needles in the streets.  Is she right because she lived there whereas you're wrong because you just visited?  Not necessarily because again it's just 1 person's experience.
Just as @jessmapex argues that conservative media likes to paint a dark picture of San Francisco to demonize the city's politics, I have to think the opposite is true with some forum members, that they are minimizing the city's very serious problems, again, because of politics.

I have lived in the Bay area since 1997. While parts of SF have declined, the larger Bay area and the suburbs are thriving...especially the marine county, the peninsula, the south bay (silicon valley, san jose) , east bay suburbs like Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Danville etc.
Bay area is still attractive for many reasons .. the cool summers are very pleasant ..even more so as I read about TX and AZ heat waves. The natural beauty of the coast, the mountains, the giant redwoods, the fog rolling in through the golden gate and the hills, the multiethnic population, great produce and fruit, pretty much every cuisine under the sky ..all still take my breath away.
SF city proper is a very small part of the greater Bay area but gets a lot of coverage in the media. The homeless, the drug users have always been concentrated in certain parts of that small city.  The downtown got impacted due to those parts being close to the downtown and remote work due to the pandemic.
Next time you talk about SF think about the Google search you did, the iphone you used, the zoom call you hopped on, the Tesla you drove etc . All these are the result of the ingenuity and hard work of the SF Bay area residents. This kind of technology and innovation used around the world does not come from a broken, lawless society.  The homeless drug users and the mentally ill in the city is a very small and not particularly significant part of the equation that has been widely exaggerated by the conservative media to portray progressive policies as the devil.

In the gay world, it's best to hang on to your money and a pet if you like one. Gay friendships, fuckbuddies, boyfriends, and even husbands are temporary. They will all eventually leave you. Best to hold on to your money and keep moving to the greener pastures fast. Unfortunately i learned this much later in life.

Allow me to share what happened to someone I know (no, not "a friend," literally just someone I know).  "John" and "Sam" meet and fall madly in love, or at least John does.  In his mid-30s, John thinks he has finally found true love.  Of course John introduced Sam to his 2 best friends, his adopted family since he wasn't that close to his biological family.
After a few times out to dinner & drinks, John's 2 friends tried to warn him that something was off, that Sam's body language just didn't feel right.  John just shrugged it off as Sam being less demonstrative or less comfortable with PDA.  After all, he and Sam had mind-blowing sex every night, which was far more important to him than some vague intuition.  Then when Sam asked John to lend him $20,000 (to start a business or some such), the 2 friends rang all the alarm bells, but too late.  The last 6 months with Sam had been the happiest of John's life.
As soon as the check cleared, so did Sam (oh, shock!).  John got a "Dear John" letter from Australia, where Sam had gone to join his true love.  Sam was terribly sorry (uh huh), but don't worry, he promised to pay John back every penny of the $20K (more uh huh).
@Statham, I realize some elements of this story differ (significantly) from your current situation, but I notice that most of the advice given is all about just the 2 of you and how you should deal with things.  Why not get a 2nd (3rd, 4th) opinion?  Trusted friends or family members will get a far more objective read on this guy.  Maybe they'll get to know him and think he's awesome and you're hella lucky.  Or maybe not.

A lot of gay men have a lot of issues. Their hyper-sexual behavior is often like an alter-ego that pops up temporarily and then they retreat into a false sense of propriety out of shame. They avoid their feelings of embarrassment by making YOU feel bad for playing along.

With the new rates, i feel like my fortunes have changed and i am no longer in the class that can afford to regularly outsource companionship and sexual needs to a provider. Surprising thing is how the fortunes changed in just a year or so. Same thing with hotels, airfares etc. And i didn't even lose my job or had any other major losses. May be I should have taken one of those PPP loans the govt doled out. That would have kept a provider or two employed 🙂

The gravy train lasts only a wee bit longer in other professions. For example, go to any tech company and you will have hard time finding a staff member over 40.
I think sex work is more honest than gold digger men/women who marry for money. It's as simple as eating out. You don't want to or can't cook at home, you eat out. You don't have a car or don't want to drive, you hire an Uber. You don't have a partner at home for companionship/sex tonight, you rent one!

I am not sure that he is serious about meeting up.  We engaged in a lot of back and forth messaging...mostly single word or single line responses from him.  When it came down to actually setting a time to meet he went silent.

I met Dan alone a few times in NYC and LA in 2019. I also had Dan and Zach together in LA in 2019. At the time both were regularly priced. I know inflation is high right now, but it didn't go up by 300% or more since Dan is now quoting 1k for an hr and Zach 3k.
Dan is super nice guy next door type, but has limits clearly stated in the ad. Between my first visit with him in NYC and last one in LA, his looks had deteriorated somewhat which made me think if he was doing some drugs. I like him for his good nature among other things. However his limited offerings definitely dont deserve 1k per hr.
Zach is not great looking in person. I have posted about him elsewhere on this forum. Of the two, Dan is probably more straight. Zach, for all his 'I am the macho str8 guy and deserve 3k per hr' attitude seemed to actually enjoy taking a few fngrs in. He is definitely not worth 3k an hr.
