  1. It's usually always more expensive to drive only one-way with a rental vehicle remember, especially between countries. Train and subways are the way to go. A car in Portugal for a day or two, just to get out of Lisbon, and see a bit of the country might be a good idea. If you do decide to rent a car (in spite of the advice on here), if you are interested in getting anywhere quickly, stick to toll highways, the other routes might be prettier, but they would be endless. Although, is this a vacation or are you working?

Before posting on here I did check rental one way and almost died, just over $600. I'm leaning more towards flying from Lisbon and if the fancy strikes rent a car for a day or two and go out of the city if public transit doesnt work to my liking. Im not sure if I'll be working in either city. The language barrier might be a bit much although I'm going to start Portuguese lessons so I hopefully have a working knowledge of the language.

  2. A momentary break in the subject at hand.

@GregM, you look adorable with the scruff in your current icon picture.

And we now return you to the original subject of this thread already in progress.

That was taken after getting back to the US from Mexico over Thanksgiving. It's gone now. I'll grow it back starting oct.

  3. I'd only be using the car from Lisbon to Madrid. I thought itd be nice to be able to stop take in an extra town or two on the way to Madrid and back. I wouldnt drive in Lisbon or Madrid.

  4. I too would be against a car in either city for the reasons the others have said. Bear in mind also that Madrid in January can get very cold. A week in Madrid in winter is probably ample, even allowing for some (if not all) of the side trips @BSR mentions (of course, for some of us, a week spent solely in the Prado would not be enough). Aranjuez and La Granja de San Ildefonso though interesting and beautiful in their way are, I would say, warm weather destinations. Take some warm clothes and an empty stomach! Have a great time.

I just looked at average temps for Madrid in Jan and for me its light coat weather. I live in Chicago and dont breat out the heavy winter coat till it dips down into the 20s. I for sure plan on bringing an empty tummy, especially for Portugal and the fresh seafood!

  5. January 2020 I will be going to Lisbon for a week and then Madrid. I'm debating on renting a car. The cost of the tollway and gas and then how hard it might be to drive around Madrid worries me. Any tips? The best alternative to driving I can see is flying. But since I only have a week in Madrid I want to make the best of it.

  6. I'm trying to plan a non working trip to Honduras this Spring. My goal, see and explore a ghetto for a couple of days. I want to interact with the locals. I know I've been called crazy for this but it's something I need to do. Any suggestions on who to get ahold of? It doesn't necessarily need to be San Pedro Sula. My dates aren't firm cause of stuff at the day job so I could be looking Spring or early Summer.

  7. Current U.S. Department of State Mexico Travel Advisory (11/2018) - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

"Exercise increased caution in Mexico due to crime. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Violent crime, such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery, is widespread."

I was just in Mexico for a couple of days in Tijuana. At no time did I feel I was in danger. I spent some time at the stadium that the caravan was at (pics and video in my IG link) and other parts of town and at no time did I feel I was in danger. Why? Because I wasnt flashy with my clothes or electronics and when I interacted with people I was polite and humble. Seems that usually when tourists get into trouble is because they're drunk, stupid and cocky. And those I feel no sympathy for. On a happy note, I'm looking forward to my next trip to mi tierra Mexico and then Guatemala and Honduras this Spring.

  8. Noooooo!!!! Am I going to be the only Latino? We need to put some color in the event or it is going to look like a GOP convention.

LOL Lat did you forget I'm one of the light skinneded bitches? If I could swing going to DC I would in a heart beat. But gotta save up some time cause I want to go to Guatemala and Honduras in the spring. No I dont have a death wish lol.
