Without being explicitly political, I do wonder if New Yorkers are feeling like their legal system is being manipulated by the current administration. America has its upper and lower class accents too. I must have been the only guy in my university class with a Chicago accent, which is considered working class, and from which my classmates tried to wean me off. The weird thing about America are the extreme regional differences. I can tell the difference between a New York, Boston, or Chicago accent, but I found Southerners can't, and refer to them all as "Yankee accents " Likewise, I've met Southerners who can tell the difference between Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans, Southern Illinois, etc., although all Southern accents sound the same to me.
