I don't know - I've eaten a lot of pizza in Italy. Of course, maybe the Italians were copying the Americans, so who knows? Pizza in Italy tends to have a thin crust and doesn't have a million toppings on it - like pizza margherita.

Long ago, I worked in a pushy French restaurant. They always had goose on the menu on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Somehow, they knew how to cook it. It was very good - moist, tender, with a full beefy flavor.

That's one of my favorite complaints - you can't get a nice roast duck in a restaurant anymore. Time was when it was a common menu item - half of a crispy roast duck with orange or cherry or plum or some sauce like that. It disappeared after nouvelle cuisine became a thing. I have tried to roast a duck a couple times, but haven't been successful.

When I lived in Germany - my all-time favorite restaurant meal was Jägerschnitzel (Schnitzel hunter-style) pork shnitzel with hunter sauce - a rich red wine sauce with mushrooms and bacon. Germans make killer gravies and sauces.

On a trip to Italy, we rented a condo in Rome. The landlord, who was very chatty and friendly regaled us with stories of his childhood in Libya when it was still an Italian colony.

In 2016, just after the referendum, I entertained a group of Examiners from the European Patent Organization who were visiting San Francisco and we were chatting about Brexit - Oh, those crazy British, what have they done, etc. etc. An Examiner from one of the newer member states in the EU, maybe Belarus or Bulgaria took offense at the conversation, because she was obviously very pro-Brexit, so much so that she wouldn't look at me or take any of the refreshments that were served and she wouldn't shake my hand as we were breaking up. Citizens of some those newer member states were ambivalent - they were afraid they were losing sovereignty by joining the EU. I was impressed by her passion but I thought her conduct was very unprofessional.

The Brits haven't completely given up their attachment to imperialism - there are 56 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, formerly called the British Commonwealth. 14 of those (15 including the UK) are Commonwealth Realms that have the British Monarch as their head of state. Famously, Princess Elizabeth and the Prince Consort had to interrupt a globe-trotting tour of the Commonwealth and return to Britain when George VI died suddenly. When I was in grade school, there was always something in our Weekly Reader about the Commonwealth. A few years ago, I was thinking about and realized we never hear anything about the Commonwealth, so I did a little research to find out if it even existed anymore. Lo and behold it still exists.

That's a suave choice.

He and I have spent quite a bit of time together - I always enjoyed seeing him. The last time I saw him was December of 2019, just before the pandemic struck.

I understood why he had to back out - It was the kind of scene you have complained about from time to time - he thought he had booked enough business to make the trip worthwhile, most of them cancelled, so he had to cancel the trip if he didn't want to lose his ass. What I should have done was pay his expenses. I have never seem myself as doing that, but it seems to be the only sure way to get who you want, where and when you want them.

There are so many scammers on hookup sites that trying to meet somebody is almost pointless.

Cards that don't allow transactions outside the US are more and more common. I have one card, a VISA gold card from a credit union that is nearly useless because the card issuer declines so many transactions - almost any online transaction is sure to be declined.
