  1. Let's get back to facts and the real world. The December jobs report came in today and blew past expectations indicating that the US economy remains strong and resilient. there is no recession in sight. Facts actually do matter. The US economy added 216,000 jobs in December | CNN Business WWW.CNN.COM The US economy added 216,000 jobs in December, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday, blowing past expectations and capping off a year of...

    *PRAGUE

Horrible news out of Prague today. We are used to hearing about these events in the US but not so much in Europe. Terrible.
  6. I agree...although I do like the look of some of the Shinola watches. Anyway, my smartphone covers all the bases for me.
  7. So funny to see how some posters want to transition this thread discussion from a potential recession (that still hasn't happened) to being a discussion about personal and national debt. I guess if you can't win the one argument then...presto chango...switch to a different topic. The national debt has been many decades in the making...under many administrations. Neither the current nor the prior administration have been nor were concerned with the ever-burgeoning national debt. Shame on both of them. I think the last time we had a balanced budget in the US was during the Clinton years. In any case, let's stay on topic. This thread is a discussion about if a recession is coming.
  8. Argentina's new president devalued the peso by over 50% today. This is one of multiple economic measures of his economic plan to shock the economy into the real world. I have been traveling to Argentina for decades and I have witnessed many economic changes. I still love Argentina in spite of it all. Great wine...great steak...beautiful men. I remember when Ford Falcons (remember those??) were seen driving all over Argentina and Uruguay.
  9. A thoughtful article by Fortune on the US economic outlook for 2024 and their take on the economic pessimists that keep predicting the recession that never comes. Economic pessimists’ bet on a 2023 recession failed. Why are they doubling down in 2024? STOCKS.APPLE.COM Despite the economy’s strength, there remains a reluctance to recognize a soft landing.
  10. Yes...but...people want to live much larger today than they did 60 years ago. The typical household has a much bigger house than before and on a much bigger lot. Two or three cars instead of one. People take much more luxurious vacations now than before. A week at the cottage will no longer do. It needs to be at least two weeks during the summer in Italy and then a one week winter cruise to the Caribbean... plus a long weekend in Las Vegas somewhere in between. I wonder if an average one salary household could sustain a family today if they lived like folks did in the 50's/60's: in a 1500 sq ft bungalow on a 5,000 sq ft lot. One car and a one-week summer vacation on the lake up north in a small rented cottage.
  11. This is so true. Jamie Dimon has been predicting a recession for over 3 years now.
  12. I also had no reaction from my 6th Covid jab 2 months ago. Interestingly, I have Covid right now (that's what a weekend in NYC, two rock concerts, a Broadway show, and an evening at Fairytail Lounge will get you) but it is a fairly mild case. I got on Paxlovid a few days ago and am already feeling much better. I (rightly or wrongly) attribute my mild case to keeping up with my Covid vaccinations. Coincidentally, on the local Michigan news tonight, they were talking about a spike in Covid cases in the state. 700 new Covid hospitalizations in the state within the last week. They say only 19% of Michiganders are current with their Covid vaccinations. A word to the wise: get vaccinated...especially if you are of a certain age as I am.
  13. Grindr is for the young and handsome/pretty. It seems to work much better if you're in a big city. Having said that, it's mostly a waste a time for me. I am honest in showing my actual body and age and, as others have mentioned, I let other's reach out to me if they are interested. It very rarely leads to a connection. I am SO HAPPY, I grew up in an era when there were no smartphones. The hook-up spots were campus bathrooms, adult bookstores, and backrooms in some of the bars. No bots in the equation at all. You saw exactly what you were going to get and they were there for the same reason as you were. Not nearly the number of games that go on today with the hook-up aps. Much simpler and more honest IMO.
  14. Yes...but it's not just a phenomenon with Sweeney Todd. Same crap happened when I saw the last production of Company on B'way. Granted, it was within a week of the show closing with Patti LuPone. I guess the LuPone fans were out in force and as boisterous as the Groban fans. Personally, I think this has come to be considered acceptable behavior at Broadway Musicals. A real shame.
  15. Same for me. My first trip to NYC without my family. Late 70's I guess. I went with some friends. Loved the show and it's simplicity.
  16. I saw this production over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Groban and Ashford were both excellent. As someone mentioned above, I also had a hard time hearing Ashford at different times during the show...so that continues to be an issue. As an aside, I'm getting really tired of the hootin' and hollerin' of Broadway audiences these days. It's really putting me off going to shows in NY to be honest.

  21. Recent news reports suggest multiple retail/grocery stores are removing self-checkout and re-instituting more cashiers. They claim self-checkout results in more honest mistakes, more theft/shoplifting, and more technical problems. i know at our local CVS, they seem to be having more technical problems with self-checkout lately which results in a cashier having to come over and fix the problem. It’s getting very frustrating. I don’t mind using self-checkout if I don’t have to weigh things. Our local small grocer doesn’t have self-checkout so not an issue there. Anyway, keep a lookout for your local self-checkout option being removed😉. 23. Walmart CEO predicts food deflation is on the horizon: New YorkCNN — Lower grocery prices may soon be coming for shoppers. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said Thursday that the US food industry may be heading into a period of deflation after three years of punishing price hikes that have caused sticker shocker for shoppers at the grocery store. Food prices have increased 25% since the pandemic started. “We may see dry grocery and consumables start to deflate in the coming weeks and months,” McMillon said. Walmart could enter “a deflationary environment.” Walmart is the largest retailer in the United States, and groceries make up more than half of its sales.
  24. The man on the street was celebrating today considering the market surged. Sadly, some posters here desperately want a recession and increasing inflation. Of course their motivations are sadly obvious. Not to worry. We are on the right track in dealing with the COVID/Ukraine-borne inflation problem felt globally. BTW, I paid $2.99/gallon for gas in Michigan today. That's also worth celebrating🙂.
