In preparation for an upcoming business trip, I am starting to make a list of potential encounters. Am I being too picky? I’ve always enjoyed beauty, brains, and a little proofreading along the way. A current ad reads,

Drama free & Descreet

Erotic message 150.00

serious inquiry's only please

Ah, yes, those erotic messages, and being descreet will no doubt entice me to send multiple inquiry’s.

You do realise a lots of escorts are foreigners with poor command of English? Yes, they should probably get a friend to help them with their wording, but am guessing that most people looking for an escort are not looking to employ them for secretarial work........ I agree that an intelligently written smart ad will always be a little more enticing, but try to cut them some slack as some of them are still struggling with English. Maybe if they are attractive enough to hire, you might offer to help them with their ad copy? There's a thought. (sorry, this was a reply to the OP)

. Am I being too picky?

Yes....

This has been discussed to ad nauseam. Would I not hire someone because of grammatical errors in their ad...no. Would I be more inclined to hire someone if their ad was perfectly written...no. Most of the guys I hire, English is not their first language, and most of them do not have a good command of it, but I simply don't care. I care how the escort/dancer treats me.

Yes! You’re being way too picky. And may I suggest you learn when to use a comma properly.

Don't you mean, " ... when to use an apostrophe properly."? Good grammar, correct punctuation, and proper syntax indicate formal education, but poorly punctuated and written material don't necessarily rule out intelligence.

I am not sure, but I see the apostrophe misused differently between foreigners and native speakers (who didn’t listen in school).

Non-native speakers, if unsure, will omit the apostrophe.

Native speakers, if unsure will over compensate and put the apostrophe were it isn’t needed.

Have you guys also observed that? It is it only me?

I find it near impossible to write without errors on my phone.

It also seems that my spelling is starting to get worse. Maybe age related.

That, and the innuendo often involved discussing this hobby, can be a bit challenging.

Then there’s the “autocorrect” / “predictive text" / "spellcheck” features that seem to think they know better. I know you can turn them off but….

So I typically compose offline on my computer. Then I walk away, think about it for awhile, inevitably revise and only then paste to the forum thread. Then I clean it up yet again before hitting submit.

And errors still sneak in.

I’m especially forgiving of anyone trying to post who’s not a native English speaker. I’m happy they’re participating whether as an advertiser or in the forum.
