I was doing food shopping today and my cart was moved a bit to allow another to pass. This little bit of motion resulted in the wheel of the cart knocking over a very unstable Tic Tac display. The person who had moved my cart said to leave it, the store employees would take care of it, but I was not inclined to do that. He carted off and I began picking up fifty Tic Tac boxes and placing them back in the display. Several people passed by but not one stopped to assist. Would you have stopped for an old man? A hot young man? A pregnant woman? An older woman? For any and all? For None?

I reported the unstable display to an employee. I let him know that even while I was trying to get the display back in place, any sort of jostle led to it tipping.

Ida helped if the fruit was spilt.

All of the above.

I hate those displays that are in my way when I'm trying to shop. The only assistance I would offer, for any of the examples you mentioned, is to go tell a store employee what had happened, so they could have someone come over and take care of it. It's their job, not yours and certainly not mine. Just my two cents.

In a store, where there are people paid to help? No, I wouldnt have stopped to re-stock a display. For anyone.

But something equivalent out in public, yes. Someone dropped folder and papers flying.... a burst grocery bag while walking, etc.

I'm thinking I would have stopped and offered to hold the boxes while he placed them back into the display area. My dexterity, or lack thereof, in trying to return them to the display would have probably taken out the entire market.

I have never been in a situation were I needed to assist someone who knocked over a display. I see people knock over or drop jars and other things all the time. I wouldn't help clean up the mess. I wouldn't be equipped to. So a knocked over display... I think it's best if workers at the store fixed the issue.

Although to prove I'm not totally insensitive, every time I get ask to get something off the top shelf I do it. I was given this height for a reason. Lol!

Regardless of whether on not it's in a store with paid employees, unless it's a job for a mop, the onus is on the person who created the disturbance to fix it. If I saw it happen, I would assist them in picking them up, although I'm unsure what I would do if I came across them halfway through them picking it all up, without actually seeing the beginning?

LOL -- not a question of just this instance - seems to be the world today!

I shovel my driveway by choice -- good exercise and as am retired, I can take my time.

Last winter after a good snow fall I was roadside dealing with what the plows had gifted me with! Bundled up w/ white beard (appear to be old man to those passing)

I counted 26 pickup trucks w/ plows pass! Not one stop to ask it I needed/wanted help! I would gladly have paid to just have that portion cleared. -- Though in my younger days when I had truck w/ plow I willing did it for older folks when I passed by -- tried to not get caught as I was not interested in a discussion about $$$$

Oh, God, would I be embarrassed in that situation! No kidding, I would have had a panic attack... immediately walked away from my cart, straight out the door and to my car. And then I would probably never go back to that store again. Kudos to you for handling it so well. :)

I would definitely help you stack that display. I'm a southern gentleman. I have no choice.

Probably for an old person. Not sure about the rest, it depends on how rushed I am.

I would've stopped for anyone. It's the right thing to do.

Thanks Drew, you have restored my faith in my fellow man, albeit very briefly. I also think I would do it because it is the right thing to do. I might be more inclined to help someone who looked as though they needed help, but my inclination would be to just help out. The day before this, I was at a deli and a woman dropped some change on the counter and a penny dropped to the floor. Out of habit, I bent over the pick it up. When I returned it to her, she did not say thank you, instead she said: "you shouldn't have bothered" which almost sounded to me as though she had said:

"you shouldn't have bothered me by picking it up and then returning it to me"

Was she younger? I'd like to think that bad manners is due to the bad parenting nowadays. Then again, I've seen older ones act the same way mainly because they feel the society owes them. They don't want to meet me. I have no issues putting them back in their place.
