Question for guys with beards (particularly greying beards).

I'm trying to let my first beard grow out a bit but once it gets to a certain point, it's unmanageable and gets a bit sloppy looking. I've been conditioning it, using beard balm, a boar's hair brush, and everything suggested on all of the sites devoted to beards.

Is there a certain point in beard growth where it just won't tame and relax? Is shorter and trimmed the only option in this case?

No real help here, NYClocker, just empathy.

I look at guys who manage to pull off that lumbersexual look and still appear neat and groomed and it's a mystery to me how they do it. (Not that everyone who attempts it succeeds, and I know plenty of guys hate the look even if it's well done.) If I let my own beard -- yes, it's graying; thanks for asking -- grow for a couple of weeks, it just looks sloppy (at least to me), so I buzz it down every 8 to 10 days, keeping it very short.

Beards are high maintenance if you want to keep them looking neat and trimmed. Much more so than shaving, but I really, really like my beard so I put up with it. I think you have to be youngish and really rocking the overall look to pull off a scruffy beard -- especially hair on the neck and cheeks.

I use a fairly basic Norelco trimmer on setting 8 which is definitely more than scruff but not long enough that it changes the whole shape of my face. I don't think anyone looks good in the beards that make the bottom half of your face all round, long or distorted. ( personal preference ) I have to go over it with the trimmer at least every 3 days.

The grey hairs are definitely more wirey then the hairs that have not gone grey. I have some weird patches that are solid gray and I touch up the color on them. The hair is noticeably more compliant after it has been broken down by the processing.

I have grown many beards over the years. Most recently, in anticipation of seeing an escorts who mentioned that he preferred men with beards, I grew a quick two week thigh pleaser.

I find that a barber does a much better job than I can in keeping my beard neat and trim. I think a nice shampoo with conditioner keeps it soft and that the best part of a soft beard is rubbing against the body of someone who appreciates the feel. Of course, there are others who appreciate the feel of beard stubble. The joy of that rough beard scraping across their inner thighs can be exquisitely intense.

So with a beard, I prefer not to worry so much about the look (after all there are limitations of just how good looking one can get) and prefer to concentrate on how I can best use that beard for sensory satisfaction. Right now, back to clean shaven.

Good luck with beard and ultimately, like most things in life, a professional does it best.

I have a white beard (prematurely, of course) which I keep short and neat. I have had this beard for 40 years.

I use an electric beard trimmer, using the attachment for the shortest and neatest maintenance about every 2-3 days.

No food or drink residues allowed. When I shower, I use the shampoo in the beard as well as my hair and the conditioner as well. Beard "stuff" as well from "The Art of Shaving."

My beard is one that grows very quickly and fills in completely so no moth-eaten appearance. If i travel, I buzz it down to scruff and by the time I return it is perfect again.

Good luck.

What I find hottest about beards is how they look with multiple loads of cum clinging to them.

I'd like to point out that this is a bad idea if you allow it to dry off, hence, I usually have my guy lick it off. @nycman , I hope you are providing such maintenance. :D

While I said, "No food or drink residues allowed..." I do agree with TR and nycguy!

I'm trying to get out of town for the long weekend but in the name of all things holy I must weigh in on this topic.:p

I have had my beard 16 years. It has been long, it has been short. It was dark brown, it is now salt and pepper. :(

I have trouble at airports bc of it. Also I generally get an empty seat next to me on airplanes bc of it.

A barber makes a big difference with grooming. Conditioner is good.

@purplekow said everything important already.

Beards are Great! Keep growing it! :)

Would a beard make you look a little bit too Muslim for comfort?

This is so cool. I think the first picture is a perfect example of someone who should not have a beard. He's a beautiful man with a dimpled chin. He should show that off!

Row C on the left is a great example of someone who goes from being nice looking to totally hot with a beard. There needs to be an app where you can take a selfie of your face and try on various beards.

Yep, he looks cute no matter what but smooth/preppy is a better for him. Sometimes a beard is useful to help frame the face and give a better jawline, in his case that's unnecessary.

Most beards...like teenagers....go through an awkward/ugly stage.

Just condition, oil, balm, and comb like crazy...it will eventually calm down...and look BEAST!

It does help if you have a hipster barber in your area who knows beards....they can help a great deal with the process.

Plus, they tend to be pretty fucking cute, homo-friendly, and they LOVE touching your beard....grin

Mine is graying for sure, along with the top :) I keep my beard pretty short, setting #3 on my trimmer. Think Wolf Blitzer beard, but neck shaved clean (jawbone line and down), and my hair is kept very short.

I boat, sail, sometimes fish - all salt water. So I like trying to convey a "Papa Hemingway" kind of look. It works for me ;)

is this topic about facial hair or ladies you take to work events and weddings?

As with most threads on this forum, this thread is about whatever you want it to be. Most threads on Daddy's should be called tapestries because they have many different threads which entwine and overlap. Most specifically, this thread is about beards on the face to start and the beards who serve to mask and deflect thoughts of a homosexual inclination were a later thread within the tapestry.

...if you're in your 40's or older, or showing white or gray, please keep it groomed and trimmed, as longer unruly hair can age you and make you look "homeless"...

Homeless!!? Yikes! Up until now my biggest worry was that a lapse in beard maintenance might make me look a little careless about my appearance. I hadn't considered the risk of looking homeless. Now I'm wondering if my old mug, a few extra days of beard growth and a ratty coat might get me a sympathy discount in certain circles.

Genetics play a huge part in how your beard grows, from number of folicals to texture and color.

Though the hair on my head is baby fine and pin straight, my beard is thick textured and very curly. Think face "fro". I am physically unable to grow a zz top-like beard as mine simply curls tighter and tighter as it gets longer. I find that thinning it with cuticle scissors works well for me. In my case, the graying of my beard is making it more manageable. I'm lucky that way. :).
