  1. Just for your information - a prescription for 90 Norco will trigger an alarm for the doctor and the pharmacy now days. Norco is infinitely easier to get than fentanyl.
  2. I can't give you the exact source other than it was from my pain management physician who was very upset at the time because it was his friend and colleague who the DEA and Medical Board went after for prescribing the fentanyl - ON A ONE TIME prescription. The patient lived on the East coast and started his trek from there - every pain doc he received a prescription from was threatened by DEA so he went from doc to doc to doc, making his way across the country. With the DEA CURES site the gov can see as soon as a prescription is filled for any controlled substance immediately. Fentanyl seems to have an alarm triggering effect. The last time I checked it was only approved for the worst cancer-related pain situations. This guy had horrendous incapacitating pain after documented lightening strike but did not qualify for use!
  3. A legitimate pain management specialist would recommend Buprenorphine which is a mild narcotic which is often used for weaning patients off of stronger narcotics such as percocet and norco or in place of. It is also used when a narcotic is necessary but the situation suggests chronic narcotic usage will eventually not work or lead to addiction or there is evidence of withdrawal. It is often the pharmacy who is the roadblock. About 5 -6 years ago I was given a prescription for 30 Norco tablets for a legitimate injury pain management and the pharmacy I went to said they only had 2. If I wanted them I would then have to get another prescription for the other 28 tablets. I went to another pharmacy and filled it without a problem but the pharmacist also said that government interference was becoming a big issue. Another issue of govt crackdown involved a legitimate issue where a man had been struck by lightening, survived but was left with tremendous painful headaches which incapacitated him. The only thing that helped was Fentanyl, legitimately prescribed by pain management specialists. Every time he filled a prescription the DEA shut down the Pain Manager until he went all over the country trying to get the medication. Finally, after SEVERAL HUNDRED (!) pain doctors could not give hime the medication because of threats from the government re: fentanyl, he and his wife committed murder-suicide. So, yes, the government is is a bigger threat than the physicians who are not trying to be so miserly. There is a government website where all restricted substance prescriptions from all physicians are recorded and the DEA or Medical Boards just have to pop on it and see the MD's who write these prescriptions, how many pills, and how often. This often leads to investigations of the MD's, rightly or wrongly, and they stop prescribing!

  6. As I began my earlier post regarding walk throughs down memory lane with my earliest memories, I began to think of my earlier life and what a true privilege I had being raised by my parents. Many here have mentioned the good, bad, the ugly of their upbringings and I have realized what a blessed life I have lived. At 75 I hadn't thought of many of the most fabulous (and I am not kidding) events in my early life. After 30 I have led a wonderful life, have had a great career, many friends and overall success. But then I began to reminisce about the "olden days" and the true fantastical events which took place thanks to my parents and my upbringing. So - to the topic: does anybody have any direct personal association with anybody or anything listed in Wikipedia? I actually have three. 1. Anna Bonomi Bolchini -- nicknamed in Italy as "The lady of Finance." Unfortunately the article is in Italian and my college Italian does help but my 75 year old mind takes too long (where is Whipped Guy when I need him?!) She, in her own right, was one of the wealthiest people in Italy before, during, and after WW2. My father was in Italy for most of WW2 and met her and her second husband, Giuseppe Bolchini, tho they were not yet married at the time, through their work with the Italian Underground and Resistance. They all remained close friends after the war. I went to Italy with my parents in 1963 and met them - the most wonderful people ever, and stayed at their well-known castle in Parqaggi, outside of and overlooking Portofino. Hence, #2. 2. Il Castello di Paraggi -- as above. Built in the 14th century and in the family since the 1800's. The art-filled rooms are more impressive than any museum I have ever visited. All original Masters, sculptures, even drawings by da Vinci - any objet you can conceive is there. During WW2, the Germans commandeered the castle and all was well hidden so that after the Germans left it could all be recovered. There is a guest book going back to its origin with the signatures of popes, kings, emperors, world leaders, and friends. If you were to be lucky enough to be invited to visit (closed to the public) and saw this guest book MY NAME IS THERE!!! Of course, all of this art is restricted to Italy, can be privately held but not be removed from the country, and is just a small portion of their holdings as they have residences all over Italy: Milan, Rome, Lake Como, etc. etc. They even leased Il Castello at one time to Sylvio Berluschoni and this is where many of his infamous parties with underage girls/women were held. The lease was not renewed after the initial period!! On to the mundane: 3. As I mentioned in my earlier post about memories, I had the fun experience in 1957 of flying on a Pan Am Boeing B377 Stratocruiser from LAX to Honolulu. This was the first of the double-deckers (prop of course) with a lounge on the lower deck and seats on the main deck. It also had berths above the seats where the "overhead compartments" would be and you could stretch out and go to sleep as you crossed the Pacific and also to Europe across the Atlantic. Only took that flight once but it is indelibly etched in my memory. I did find out from Wikipedia that It turned out the safety record on this aircraft was not the best but I lived to tell! Does anybody else have connections to postings in Wikipedia?
  7. We also had a '59 Chevy wagon - white with blue interior. My mom was a stay at home mom and used to chauffeur my bro and I everywhere in that car as well as packing it up to the gills with marketing, taking us and our cub scout friends to meetings, little league, etc. That car brought back many memories!
  8. Agree with that whole-heartedly!
  9. Thanks - my vet said the same thing with the caveat he had seen a flurry of cases, not as severe as has been publicized. Lately. none.

    HPV

There is no upper limit of effectiveness - anyone having sex - same sex or other, needs to get the vaccine. Anyone just getting back into the "dating scene" after a long term relationship is at risk as well. I know of several heterosexual couples who lost partners after 40-50 years of monogamy who wound up with HPV infections from new partners. It's the one common vaccine that we have that can prevent cancer - anal, oral, etc. Just ask Michael Douglas! Kids get the vaccine starting at about 10 years of age. Truly, it has been around for many years and the only things originally holding people back from getting it were: (1) insurance coverage and (2) oh! you're too old. Neither reason is valid.
  11. What is your earliest memory? I'm 75 now now but my earliest VERIFIABLE memory was at age 2 years - my parents were building a new house and the lot was full 0f trenching for the foundation. My brother and I were running around and I tripped and fell into one of the trenches and tore the frenulum in my mouth between the inner upper lip and gum. Bled like a son of a bitch and scared the shit out of my mom. I remember all the blood and my mom crying and calling my dad (a doctor) and then being taken to my doctor. It seems to be a right of passage for all kids - I don't know a single adult who still has that piece of tissue. One night at dinner when I was about 14-15, my dad asked each of us our earliest memory and I right away said it was this and he laughed and said he remembered it like it was yesterday! He asked me questions about it and it was clear as day to me. My second earliest memory was about 6 months later - my dad and I (mom followed with brother on a different flight) flew from LA to New York on a DC-6 (direct but NOT non-stop), in winter. I distinctly remember telling my dad, as I looked out the window over New York, that all the lights were twinkling like Christmas lights. Again, he verified the memory, tho it had never been spoken about in my presence. The trip had been very traumatic for all as I was going across the country to have very specialized surgery (all went well!) A later fun memory was age 7 ( 1955) taking a Pan Am Boeing B377 Stratocruiser (double decker - unique in those days) from LA to Honolulu. If the stewardesses (excuse me, flight attendants) could have thrown my brother and me out over the Pacific, they would have - we had so much fun running around. The flight was realllllly long and thus, there was a lounge for socializing on one deck and seats and berths on the other! Could not have been more than 50 or 60 passengers. I have since found out that that particular model airliner seemed to have a lot of safety issues and I guess we were really lucky. What about you guys?
  12. Welcome back - enjoyed our meets many a year ago! Had no idea about your brother and it's great you are able to help out in such a special way! The fact that you did this leads me to think you will always be there, no matter that he is 18 now. Good job!
  13. Wow - brings back memories. When I was about 9-10 and my brother a year older, my dad had about 6-7 of us guys together one day and the others' fathers at the same time and we all had "the talk." My dad was a doctor, the other dads were also professionals of all sorts and it was hysterical for all involved - think of it: 4-5 adult dads trying to get it right for 6 or 7 10-11 year olds. That meeting is still remembered over 60 years later with all involved. My brother's best friends (still) were in that group and are all present and accounted for. Mine not much, for various reasons, sad to say.
  14. I luv dog parks for my 2 pals - but what I did first was to go to the 2 parks I was considering and just observed the types of dogs and people a few times. What I found made my decision: at 1 park the people were snooty, did not pay any attention to their pets and, as such, there were a few tussles. The second park everybody was involved, keeping an eye on their pets, cleaning up, etc. They also often brought food that anybody could partake of, were very social with giving out phone numbers, etc. One last step I did before letting them loose at the park was to take them to a doggie day care for a few sessions of being with other dogs for an extended period - maybe 5-7 other dogs at a time. When the operators told me they were fine with all sizes of dogs, I knew it was time. They love it. My only concern was lately there has been a dog respiratory illness that has been serious. My vet says it is much less prevalent in the past 1-2 months so it's back on!
