Especially if you rely on what an escort told you about your "looks" and "age", silly ;-)

Always good to have you here with your snarky little comments...have yourself a nice day.

It also depends on the person and their lifestyle. In my work I see many patients who look 40 or 50, until I check their chart and am amazed that they are only 20. Hard life, drugs, alcohol, smoking.. its like crypt keeper before your even 40.

How about the ones who look younger than their age? From what you've seen, what are they doing right? Do you really think alcohol use matters? I'm a very light drinker, but people I know who get drunk regularly have aged just fine.

What is old age keeps changing as I grow older.

Same here.

Only my body feels old, and that's due to medical conditions, lack of general physical fitness, and a sedentary life. But my mind, spirit, and looks are still young.

Sorry to hear about the medical conditions. As for the rest, consider yourself lucky. It's far easier to increasing muscle mass and reduce fat than to make one's mind or looks younger. (For evidence of the latter, take a look at the unfortunate-looking celebrities on any tabloid cover when you're at the supermarket.) In any case, as Catherine Deneuve once lamented, “At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass."

“At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass."

That's true. If I stay lean enough for my body to look great, I look drawn in the face. If I carry enough fat for my face to look its best, I have a little tire. I've decided I'm the only one I have to please and that it pleases me most to look trim and cut.

OLD AGE - HOW DO WE KNOW IF WE'RE REALLY IN IT?? (what I've gleaned myself, IS THIS YOU??)

YOU HAVE AN UNCONTROLABLE URGE TO SAVE REALLY GOOD SHOPPING BAGS.

WHEN YOU GET SCHOOL OR LITTLE LEAGUE PIX OF YOUR NEICES N NEPHS OR GRAND NEICES N NEPHS YOU JUST STICK THEM IN THE CORNERS OF ALREADY FRAMED PIX.

YOU HAVE A RUBBER BAND AROUND YOUR CHECKBOOK.

IT TAKES MORE THAN ONE TRY BECAUSE YOU MISS GETTING YOUR FOOT THRU YOUR UNDERWEAR IN THE MORNING ON THE FIRST.

YOU HAVE LITTLE SHAMPOO/CONDITIONER/BODY WASH SAMPLES IN THE SHOWER BUT CAN'T READ WHICH IS WHICH.

I'M GETTING DEPRESSED NOW SO I'M STOPPING MYSELF.

I agree that an escort can make you feel younger! Someone I've been with monthly now does just that. It has helped me physically by motivating me to workout, eat better, and take of my skin, which he has helped me with to great affect. But also mentally- I love talking to him and we have great conversations (as well as sex of course!). I'm in my mid 50s but feel better than I did 5 yrs ago.

Reminds me of that scene in "Postcards from the Edge" back in the 80s...... Meryl Streep plays Shirley Maclaine's daughter... and during an argument, Meryl refers to herself as middle aged. Shirley says, "No, dear, I am middle aged" and Meryl says, "How many 120 year old women do you know?"...

Oh my gosh thank you for reminding me of "Postcards from the Edge". I had completely forgotten about that movie so I watched it tonite on AppleTV. It's 25 years later and it really stands the test of time. Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep? Who could ask for more!

Watch it!

I miss Starbuck who started this thread. To go beyond that sentence would reveal stuff he told me in private. In this situation only, I would have greatly preferred a new thread on the same subject.

Checking in again:

I'm 3/4 bionic in the limbs (and no, it neither cost $6,000,000 nor did it make me faster or better). But I'm in better shape than in the rest of my life. I don't smoke, moderately drink, and have maxedout the cable machjines twice at the gym. In fact, my new Trainer and I are trying to figure out how she's going to train me, as she's beginning to have problems moving the weights herself.

I really need to meet some of you guys.

I think to be pedantic, young is 0-30, middle age is 30-60, and old is 60-90.

Old does not mean unhealthy, nor does it mean bad. It simply means you've been around a long time, relatively speaking. There are people over 100 who compete in cycling races and there are 40 year olds who struggle to get up off the toilet. The racers over 100 are still old and the struggling 40 year olds are still middle aged.

I have another version of this argument with some friends who chafe at being called "Ma'am" or "Sir." It doesn't mean you are an old biddy/codger, it mean you are an adult and it's a term of respect. What's silly is people who will never see 35 again using "boy" in their online dating handle.

The mother of a good friend of mine threw herself a 60 year old birthday bash entitled "Farewell to Autumn".

Her take was that the seasons of the year reflect one's journey through life.

Until 20 it's your Spring to blossom and grow. Your 20's and 30's are the prime, vibrant Summer of your life. You get the gist.

But she was quick to add that the forecast was indeed for a long, yet pleasant Winter.

I always thought 18-39: young adult, 40-64: middle age, 65+: old age/senior citizen. Is that not the standard? Of course, I have a friend who was skiing and playing tennis in her 90s, so old age doesn't mean life is over. I intend to be an active senior citizen when my time comes.

I have the body of a 60 yo and the mind of a 30 yo; It's not until I try to spend a night out on the town with the 30's crowd that I understand what I am.

You're old when you start insisting on that nap everyday.

The problem with aging is that the mind often doesn't while the body definitely does. I'm 74 and while my mind always says I can do anything I want there are times when my body says bull shit.

When I was a kid, many people in their 40s had grandkids and were old. By 60 , several had great grandkids.

Now 40s is young and 60s maybe middle age. I guess 70s, 80s are old?

When doing a prostate check during a routine physical, I would ask the patient if he has had a prostate exam in the past. If the answer was no, I would tell him: Today you are a middle aged man.

Old is when you cannot count on one hand, the number of physical complaints you have.

By that standard, I was middle aged at 32 and old at 55.

I also calculate my age based on my life expectancy and using a calendar as the standard. So as of my most recent calculation, I am in the October 17 of my life. So I have a few holidays left and about 10 good weekends, so I intend to use them.

i had this conversation with a patient today who said he felt old at 40 though he knew he was not old. i told him that the doctor practicing in the next room was 88 and he worked 4 days a week...that doctor told me he works for the benefits and I doubt many would call him old. This person, seemed to complain about every ache and pain and was generally miserable. He was old at 40. So age is number but when you are old, you will know it. I came four times the other day with an escort half my age and I doubt he could have done the same (no wise remarks about the quality of the partners) so who was old there? I did not feel old when I hopped out of bed that morning. This morning on the other hand.....Old man River, he just keep rolling along

you were

Still on one hand so I'm still middle age.... However, I still want my nap!

A friend's father put it this way: Any day you can get out of bed, and do that yourself; and go to the bathroom, and do THAT yourself; is already a pretty good day.

Those people are still around. A couple of years ago two classmates of mine became a father and a grandfather for the first time respectively. And I have other friends just having their first kids now in their late 40s. At 46 I've decided that ship has sailed for me unless I meet Mr. Right and he's under 35. I just don't think I could keep up with a toddler with my current mobility.

I think people have gone a bit farther than is advisable in postponing their childbearing. Something to be said for being young enough to really enjoy empty nesting, also to be able to help out with the grandkids.

He complains all the time that the staff can't get his patients in fast enough to keep up with his pace. Granted his staff is pretty poor but he is thorough and diligent and as best I can tell, loves doing what he does.

I had a V/Q scan not long ago. The doc who read the scan was ancient. I just thought, talking to him, "You're my hero, my kind of old guy."
